Vote For A Place Of Healing And Togetherness By Kinga Walsh
To the Editor:
I am writing as a resident and not a member of the community center commission.
Join me and vote "Yes" to support the proposed community center at the Tuesday, April 5th vote (NMS 6 am-8 pm)!ÃÂ This proposal reflects the GE donor agreement intent and directly responds to the wants/needs of many demographic groups as well as creates a central, community space at FFH.
The proposal specifically includes:
*An anchor building, or hub, made up of a large entry and common area, multi-purpose, flexible space and a "great room" for events, arts, and/or gatherings of up to 18,000 square feet.
*A 50-meter, 8-lane pool with one bulkhead and a zero-entry activity pool
*Dedicated space for Legacy Foundations established after the tragedy.
*A variety of standard features such as storage, locker rooms, family restrooms and spectator seating.
Strategic recommendations were also made to help the town continue to move grow but with fore-thought and aligned goals:
*Create a strategic plan that outlines the future community use of all town land/buildings,
*Create a steering committee comprised of residents to collaborate with the town and provide input throughout the planning and construction processes,
*Prepare land/ability to connect for potential future construction options (e.g., senior center, ice arena, amphitheater)
*Hire an outside, seasoned director
The center offers a place of healing and community togetherness.ÃÂ It is a "hub"/anchor that creates a point-of-distinction for Newtown and may entice new residents and/or businesses to call Newtown home.
Let's come together as a community not only in the center's space but also at the vote.ÃÂ Let us say "thank you" to GE for their generosity and move forward in our healing.
