DANBURY â For every action there is an opposite and equal reaction and the Newtown High School golf team could certainly understand that because as its scores began to climb, the losses began to pile up.
After starting the season so strongly and winning their first four matches (although they did not play well in that fourth win), the Nighthawks dropped into a slump where Mike Troy seemed to be the only one shooting consistently well.
And with that slump came three consecutive losses.
The âHawks snapped out of it on Tuesday afternoon at Richter Park in Danbury with a 168-196 win over Immaculate. Ben Moore and Troy shared medallist honors after firing blistering rounds of 1-over 37. Greg Korotash followed with a strong 5-over 42 and Matt Ronan finished the rotation with a 15-over 52.
The Mustangs struggled on their home course, getting a 44 from Sean McKay, a 48 from Mike Kozlowski, a 50 from Mike Levine and a 54 from Chris Dunn.
The âHawks needed a decent round after losing to Foran last Thursday at Grassy Hill Country Club in Milford and Pomperaug Monday afternoon at Heritage Village Country Club in Southbury. The loss to Foran was the most vexing, though, as the âHawks fell 178-183.
In that one, Troy carded an even-par 36 to earn medallist honors, but Korotash (47), Jon Cain (49) and Chris Larocque (50) struggled and were unable to overcome mediocre rounds posted by Tom Kirstein (41), Jim Kirstein (45), Dan Lennon (46) and Mike Cerretta (46) of Foran.
The âHawks were only a little bit better on Monday and lost a 162-175 decision to Pomperaug. Troy carded a 5-over 40 and lost the bid for medallist to Jamie Bebrin (36) of Pomperaug. Moore (44), Korotash (45) and Andrew Fiscella (46) finished the rotation for Newtown while Scott Milford (39), Dave Barton (43) and Tyler Kamide (44) rounded out the Pomperaug rotation.
The Panthers remained unbeaten at 7-0.
The Nighthawks were set to meet Weston at Aspetuck Country Club on Thursday and will return home next Monday and Wednesday for matches with Jonathan Law and New Milford.
