With 'Mr Popper's Penguins,' One School One Read Begins At Sandy Hook School

Before Sandy Hook Elementary School's One School One Read was revealed at a school assembly on Monday, March 7, reading consultant Cynthia McArthur reminded students about the success of the program in past years.Charlotte's Webb by E.B. Ms McArthur scrolled through images of covers from past books to remind the students about all the books that have been read through the years.The Cricket in Times Square by George Selden, The Chocolate Touch by Patrick Skene Catling, The World According to Humphrey by Betty G. Birney, Red Slider by Blair Hickson, A Bear Named Trouble by Marion Dane Bauer, The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies, Stuart Little by E.B. White, Frindle by Andrew Clements, and How Do You Burp in Space? And Other Tips Every Space Tourist Needs to Know by Susan E. Goodman. The 2014-15 One School One Read book was Friendship According to Humphrey by Betty G. Birney.Mr Popper's Penguins by Richard and Florence Atwater.

The effort, Ms McArthur told the students, has "everyone in the whole building read the same book at the same time," from students to school staff.

As Ms McArthur came to more recent One School One Read selections, the students began to show their excitement for this year's chosen book.

Clues were shared with students before the assembly, and one final clue was shared by Ms McArthur and her fellow One School One School committee members. All of the committee members present for the assembly were dressed as penguins for the event, and they danced along to a song and video played at the assembly.

Other One School One Read committee members are Kathy Gramolini, Kristy Davenport, Laura Feinstein, Beth Murphy, Kelly Teraszkiewicz, Jessica DeBiase, Dawn Eagleson, and Tim Napolitano.

Ms McArthur said before the assembly that the committee members read about 20 books before narrowing the choices and voting on the remaining three reads.

The entire Sandy Hook School community will read the book through March 24, when a culminating event is planned to celebrate the book and the reading effort.
