DUI/Assault
After learning that police held a warrant for his arrest, Jonathan Sager, 34, of 127 Sugar Street turned himself over to police on May 22 and was charged with driving under the influence and also with second-degree assault with a motor vehicle while intoxicated. The charges stem from an auto accident last November on Great Hill Road.
The assault charge, which is a felony, involves a situation in which an intoxicated driver seriously injures another person.
Police have said that Sager was driving a 1986 Chevrolet Corvette sports car southward on Great Hill Road about 1:07 am last November 3, when he lost control of the car after negotiating a right curve in the road.
The Chevrolet hit the southbound curb and then slid sideways across the road, before its passenger side hit a utility pole along the northbound curb, breaking the pole at its base. The car then hit a tree and caught on fire, police have said. The Fiberglas body of the auto melted in the fire.
Kristen Cirkot, 21, of Seymour was a passenger in the two-seater, police said. Hawleyville firefighters went to the accident to put out the fire, police said. The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Sager and Cirkot to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries.
After processing his arrest on May 22, police released Sager on a $35,000 bond for a June 5 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.
Vehicle/Drug Charges
Police said they stopped Caryn Trotta, 47, of Middlebury about 7:47 pm May 22 on Church Hill Road for a motor vehicle violation.
Police said they charged Trotta with driving an unregistered vehicle, driving under suspension, possession of less than four ounces of marijuana within 1,000 feet of a school, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Trotta posted a $50 bond and was released for a June 5 appearance in Danbury Superior Court, police said.
South Main DUI
Police said they received a complaint concerning erratic driving on South Main Street, near Elm Drive, about 11:15 pm May 22.
Police said they found the reported vehicle being driven by Robert Berube, 34, of 55 Sugar Street and investigated, finding Berube to be driving under the influence of drugs. A search of the vehicle turned up marijuana and drug paraphernalia, police said.
Police charged Berube with driving under the influence of drugs, possession of less than four ounces of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
After processing the arrest, police released Berube on a $500 bond for a June 5 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.
Walnut Tree Hill DUI
Police report they received a telephone call reporting erratic driving on Riverside Road, in which the caller provided the marker plate number of the vehicle, at about 10:15 pm May 25.
Police said they spotted that vehicle on Walnut Tree Hill Road and stopped it. Police said that after investigating, they charged the driver, Michael P. Snyder, 47, of 5 Todds Road with driving under the influence and improper use of a marker plate. Police released Snyder on a $100 bond for a June 10 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.
Sign Defaced
Sometime between 2 pm May 23 and 10:15 am May 24, someone used spray paint to deface a sign posted at the corner of Great Ring Road and Route 34 in Sandy Hook, police report.
Police ask anyone with information about who vandalized the sign to contact them at 426-5841.
Multiple Charges
About 8 pm May 25, police spotted motorist Summer S. Walker, 21, of Branford drive through a red traffic signal at the intersection of Mile Hill Road and Route 34 in Sandy Hook.
Police said they stopped the auto and charged Walker with failure to obey a traffic control signal, driving under suspension, possession of less than four ounces of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Police released Walker on a $100 bond for a June 10 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.
Plumbing Tools
Police said they received for safekeeping on May 24 a gray plastic toolbox containing plumbing tools, which was found on Poorhouse Road in Dodgingtown. The owner should contact police at 3 Main Street to claim the tools.
Hanover DUI
Motorist Allen Kellogg, 31, of 5 Flat Swamp Road was driving a 2002 Dodge pickup truck northward on Hanover Road, near Sunset Hill Road, about 7:30 pm May 26, when the truck went off the northbound road shoulder, police said.
Police said Kellogg failed field sobriety tests and was charged with driving under the influence and making a restricted turn. After posting a $100 bond, police released Kellogg for a June 5 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.
Church Hill DUI
As a result of receiving a complaint, police said they stopped motorist Michael D. Ellor, 43, of 34 Jeremiah Road on Church Hill Road at about 10:13 pm May 26.
Police said Ellor failed field sobriety tests and was charged with driving under the influence. Ellor was released for a June 5 appearance in Danbury Superior Court to answer the charge, police said.
Route 34 Crash
Motorist Joseph Myers-Bittner, 20, of 307 Berkshire Road was driving a 1997 Honda Accord southward on Route 34 at about 8 am May 22, when he slowed down and then stopped to turn left into the Misty Vale Deli parking lot, police said.
Southward motorist James L. Sullivan, 69, of Waterbury, who was driving a 1996 Ford Aerostar, then struck the Honda from behind, police said. There were no injuries. Police issued Sullivan a written warning for traveling too fast for conditions.
Main Street DUI
Motorist Lisa Kohler, 43, of Stratford was driving a 1994 Ford Taurus southward on Main Street about 10:30 pm May 23, police said. Kohler was traveling behind a southward 2000 Chevrolet Blazer driven by Harvey Pessin, no age given, of 59 Main Street, police said.
Pessin slowed down to turn right into his driveway at 59 Main Street and Kohler then attempted to pass Pessin on the right, but Kohler caused an accident in doing so, police said.
Kohler then continued driving southward, but was followed by a witness to the accident, who called police, police report.
Police stopped Kohler on Birch Rise Drive and investigated, charging her with driving under the influence, evading responsibility, and passing on the right.
After processing the arrest, police released Kohler on a $50 bond for a June 6 court appearance.
Mile Hill DUI
Police said they were investigating a report of erratic driving about 11:30 pm May 25 and stopped motorist Armando Morales, 24, of Danbury on Mile Hill Road. Following an investigation, police charged Morales with driving under the influence and driving without a driverâs license.
After processing the arrest, police released Morales on a $100 bond for a June 5 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.
Middle School Alcohol
At about 2:30 pm May 21, police charged a child at Newtown Middle School with possession of alcohol by a minor in a public place.
Police said they found the youth in possession of alcohol on school grounds. Because the child is under age 16, his or her identity was not disclosed by police.
Police issued the youth a summons for a June 2 appearance in Danbury Juvenile Court to answer the charge.
Burglary/Larceny
After learning that police held a warrant for her arrest, Amy Caposella, 27, of Naugatuck turned herself over to police on May 27.
Police charged her with third degree burglary and third degree larceny in connection with a February 20 residential burglary on Jeremiah Road in Sandy Hook. Third degree larceny involves the theft of items worth between $1,000 and $5,000. Both charges are felonies.
Police transported Caposella to Danbury Superior Court that day for arraignment on the charges.
I-84 DUI
State police said they saw motorist Bruce Helman, 41, formerly of East Liverpool, Ohio, driving erratically on westbound Interstate 84 between Exits 10 and 9 at about 10:30 pm May 22, so they stropped him to investigate.
State police charged Helman with driving under the influence, failure to drive in the proper lane, and failure to obtain a Connecticut driverâs license.
Helman was scheduled to appear in Danbury Superior Court to answer the charges.
Backhoe Vandalism
Sometime between 3 pm May 23 and the early morning of May 27, someone vandalized two backhoes that were parked at the Nagy Brothers Construction Company gravel mine on Cold Spring Road in Botsford. The firm has been mining the site for years.
Police ask anyone with information about the criminal mischief to contact them at 426-5841.
Chainsaw Theft
On either May 13 or 14, someone stole a Stihl-brand chainsaw from the St Rose Church grounds on Church Hill Road. The stolen item is an orange-and-white Model 28 chainsaw. Police ask anyone with information on the theft to contact them.
Safety Belt
Police said that at about 9:39 pm May 27, they stopped motorist Matthew Gilmartin, 45, of New Milford on Queen Street for driving without wearing his safety belt. Police charged Gilmartin with failure to wear a safety belt and with driving while under suspension. Police released Gilmartin from custody on a written promise to appear June 10 in Danbury Superior Court to answer the charges.
Mile Hill Crash
Motorist Traci Barry, 25, of Bridgeport was driving a 2001 Nissan Sentra sedan westward on Mile Hill Road about 4:22 pm May 26, when after making a curve in the road, she lost control of the auto, crossed the road and struck a utility pole along the eastbound road shoulder, police said. Barry was not injured.
Police issued her a written warning for failure to drive to the right.
Bennetts Bridge Collision
Police report a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Bennetts Bridge Road and Jeremiah Road in Sandy Hook about 8 am May 27.
Motorist Michael Cerreta, 46, of 44 Bennetts Bridge Road was driving a 1999 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck northward on Bennetts Bridge Road, as motorist Haven A. Quint, 43, of Thomaston was driving a 1993 International 4900 tanker truck southward on Bennetts Bridge Road, police said.
The Toyota turned left to enter Jeremiah Road, after the International had turned right to enter Jeremiah Road, resulting in a collision, police said. There were no injuries. Police issued Cerreta a written warning for making a restricted turn.
Moving Violations
Police report they stopped motorist Kenneth Ganger, 32, of 101 Church Hill Road at about 11:41 am May 28 on Mile Hill Road for a motor vehicle violation. On investigating, police charged Ganger with misuse of marker plates, driving under suspension, driving an unregistered vehicle, and driving without automotive insurance.
Police released Ganger for a June 12 appearance in Danbury Superior Court. Newtown police turned over Ganger to Fairfield police who held a warrant for him.
DUI Charge
Police said that while on patrol on South Main Street at about 9:48 pm May 28, they spotted motorist Michael D. Brennan, 47, of 2-A Fire Tree Lane turn right from Country Club Road onto South Main Street, without stopping for a stop sign.
Brennan then drove southbound on South Main Street in the northbound lane, almost colliding head-on with a police car, police said.
Police stopped Brennan on Mile Hill Road and charged him with driving under the influence, failure to obey a stop sign, failure to drive to the right, and interfering with police.
After posting a $100 bond, police released Brennan for a June 11 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.
