Newtown Track And Field Teams Second In SWC Championships

Led by some stellar individual performances, both the girls' and boys' track and field squads from Newtown High School recorded runner-up performances in the South-West Conference championship meet at Bethel High, on May 23.

The girls scored 91 points to finish runner-up to Weston, which tallied 126.50, among 14 schools. On the boys' side, the Nighthawks recorded 100 points to place second behind Masuk of Monroe, with 131, among 13 teams.

Makenna Cerney won the 300 meter hurdles in a time of 46.27. Annika Alexander won the discus throw competition with finals throw of 105-10; Alexander was fourth in the shot-put with a throw of 30-05.75. Lauren Russo gave the Nighthawks another first-place finish, winning the pole vault event by clearing 11 feet. Teammate Jackie Sgobbo was fifth in the pole vault, clearing 9-06.

Carly Swierbut was third in the 200 meter dash in 26.94. Cerney was fourth in the 100 hurdles in 16.76.

The 4x800 relay contingent of Madison Findley, Grace Corcoran, Camryn Cicarelli, and Erin Tressler was fourth in 10:08.62.

Sarah Mawdsley came in fourth in the 3200, coming across the finish line in 11:32.42.

Marley Marston was second in the shot-put throw with a launch of 31-07.75. In the javelin throw, Marston placed fifth with a finals heave of 91-07.

Cameron Vazquez placed third in the high jump with a leap of 4-10.

For the boys, Jack Godfrey took home top honors in the discus throw with a toss of 134-06, and Godfrey won the shot-put event with a throw of 50-03.25.

Dylan Lew was second in the pole vault competition clearing the bar at 11-06.

Cole Terry was third in the 110 meter hurdles in a time of 15.84, and teammate Brett Deri followed in fourth place with a time of 16.22. Terry came in third in the high jump competition, jumping 5-10.

Hunter Cobb placed fourth in the 100 dash, finishing in 11.69. Deri came in fourth in the 300 meter hurdles in 42.40.

Adam Manes was fourth in the long jump with an effort of 19-09.25.

Newtown had success in the relay events. The 4x100 meter relay team of Cormac Roe, Kevin Arther, Ben Mason, and Cobb was third in 45.28. The 4x800 relay team of Dylan Bartlett, Christian Lestik, Ryan Escoda, and Joel Duval came in fifth in 8:23.85. Newtown's 4x400 relay of Arther, Duval, Richard Linley, and Terry was third in 3:32.56.
