Softball Squad Blanks Panthers For Second Consecutive Title
Newtown High School's softball team broke loose for eight runs in the second inning on its way to an 11-0 triumph over Pomperaug of Southbury in the South-West Conference championship game, under the lights at DeLuca Field, on May 26.
The second-seeded Nighthawks and No. 1 Panthers split a pair of regular season contests. Newtown has won the SWC title two years in a row.
Newtown pitcher Lauren Wilcox shook off singles by Pomperaug's first two hitters to begin the game, allowing just one more hit the rest of the way. Wilcox won MVP honors.
Mali Klorczyk doubled, hit a two-run home run, and scored twice in the second frame.
Haley Ryan had a hit and run scored. Sara Kennedy walked, singled, drove in a run, and scored a run. Katie Laaksonen smacked a pair of doubles and scored twice. Kamdynn Moroney had a single, double, and run scored. Mackenzie Macchiarulo had two singles, an RBI, and run scored. Emily Bell had a single, RBI, and run scored. Tess Mubarek singled, doubled, drove in a run, and scored. Jill Lasorsa had a single, RBI, and run scored.
