Newtown Physician For Over 30 Years
Dr B. Joseph Meehan, 78, Brookfield, formerly of Newtown, died unexpectedly January 16 in Danbury Hospital.
He was born in Brattleboro, Vt., on May 1, 1927, a son of James and Julia (Dineen) Meehan.
Dr Meehan was raised and educated in Waterbury. He served in the US Navy during World War II and was a graduate of Tufts University, Medford, Mass., Class of 1949. He then attended medical school in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he met his first wife, Suzanne Mirc.
Dr Meehan did his residency in Washington, D.C., before opening his medical practice in Newtown. He practiced internal medicine, with a focus on geriatrics and pulmonary disease, in Newtown for more than 30 years and was an attending physician at Danbury Hospital.
Dr Meehan is survived by seven children, Danielle Dineen and Christopher Meehan, both of Los Angeles., Suzanne Meehan of Brooklyn, Maureen Meehan Golonka of Haleiwa, Hawaii, and Nicholas Meehan of Seattle; and one sister, Julia McGrath of Stamford. Dr Meehan is also survived by four grandchildren, Thomas Meehan Keller, Zoe Meehan Golonka, Alicia Meehan Golonka, and Arielle Luca Candaele.
Funeral services will be held 11:30 am, Saturday, January 21, in the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown. Interment will be in St Rose Cemetery in the spring. Friends may call on Saturday morning from 9:30 to 11:30 am.
