Two top state Democratic leaders took pains this week to praise the No. 2 Democrat on Newtownâs ticket, foregoing the traditional practice of state party heavyweights of plugging the candidacies of those at the top of the their partyâs local election slate.
Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz and Attorney General Richard Blumenthal both acknowledged the work and talents of Legislative Councilman Joe Hemingway, who is a Democratic candidate for the Board of Selectmen. Their comments came October 27 in a release from Fetzer-Hemingway campaign chairman Gene Vetrano.
In a statement, Mr Blumenthal wrote, âJoe Hemingway is a leader of integrity and intelligence for Newtown. On the Town Council, he has been a public servant of consistent courage and conviction. I am proud to endorse him now again â as I did first in 2007 for Town Council â as he seeks a term as Selectman for Newtown.â
âYour understanding of the issues, superior organization skills, and dedication to town affairs sets you apart as a person who can effectively manage a variety of important projects,â said Ms Bysiewicz, who is currently exploring a possible run for governor in 2010. âAs a Councilman, you have generously shared your skills and your time, contributing to the success of others around you and have come to serve as a role model to so many across our state.â
Mr Hemingway is currently representing District 2 on the Legislative Council. He previously served on the Legislative Council from 2001 to 2005.
âI have worked with both the attorney general and secretary of the state on a number of issues,â said Mr Hemingway. âI look forward to working with them for the people of Newtown on the Board of Selectmen.â
In other related campaign news, Congressman Chris Murphy (D-Fifth) lent his support to the two Democratic candidates recently as the trio knocked on votersâ doors along Main Street.
âTalking to voters directly has been the most important part of this campaign,â Mr Fetzer said in a separate release. âWe have reached over 7,000 voters, which letâs us know what theyâre really concerned about.â
âIt was great to be able to walk with Congressman Murphy,â said Mr Hemingway. âIt allowed voters to talk not only about local issues, but federal as well. We need to make sure that we are always reaching out and talking with constituents; itâs the best way to know what they need.â
