The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) will have Shauna Shane painting a still life in watercolor on Wednesday, September 14, at 7:30 pm.

The program is open to the public, free of charge. It will take place in the lower meeting room of Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street (at the flagpole).

Working in a variety of mediums Shane Shane's paintings are saturated with light and color.

This time her demonstration will be in what Ms Shane calls "courageous watercolor," in that she will dispel the myths of watercolor: unlike its reputation, the medium is both versatile and correctable.

While working from a still life setup, Ms Shane will discuss each decision she makes as she designs and lays out her painting, describing areas of light and shadow in pencil before adding watercolor. She will describe the most effective way to load the brush, dropping one color into another, allowing freshness and vibrancy throughout the painting.

A popular demonstrator and teacher, Ms Shane takes pride in her ability to convey to others how to see and understand the visual world.

She teaches at Glastonbury Art Guild, West Hartford Art League, and in her own studio in Storrs.

Ms Shane's work has been exhibited in international competitions around the country, including Oil Painters of America, Allied Artists of America, and Salmagundi Club exhibits in New York City. She has exhibited and received major awards in the last eight years of Renaissance Pastel International Exhibits, and recent awards were received in the 2012 and 2013 Hudson Valley Artists Exhibit.

Juried Paint Outs have included Brandywine, Penn. (October 2013), St. Petersburg, Fla., in 2010, and Bradenton, Fla., in 2012.

A professional painter for more than 34 years, Ms Shane is represented in collections in the US and around the world, including the Governor's portrait in the State Capitol in Helena, Montana.

Selected in 2010 as Resident Artist at the New Britain Museum of American Art, Ms Shane began her career as Resident Artist at Yellowstone National Park.

Reservations are not needed for SCAN programs, but additional information is available by calling 203-426-6654.
