SET 2/21; AVV/CD #729726
NEW YORK CITY â On Monday, March 3, the Appraisers Association of America will present the fourth of six lectures in the 2007-2008 Freemanâs Lecture Series, with speaker James Zemaitis, Sothebyâs head of Twentieth Century decorative arts and design, lecturing on the Twentieth Century design market.
Known in the field as the âChair Man,â he first began his auction career in 1996 at Christieâs, where he worked for three years in the Twentieth Century design department. Prior to his arrival at Sothebyâs in 2003, Zemaitis organized a series of groundbreaking sales at Phillips de Pury & Luxembourg, where he was worldwide head of TwentiethâTwenty-First Century design.
From his record-breading $21.5 million sale total in December 2003, and the landmark sale of the Farnsworth House by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe to the National Trust, to the December 2006 offering of New Life for the Nobel Tree: The Dr Arthur & Evelyn Krosnick Collection of Masterworks by George Nakashima, Sothebyâs has raised the market to new heights.
Zemaitis serves on the boards of the Wolfsonian, Miami Beach, and Manitoga: the Russel Wright Design Center in Garrison, N.Y. He also is co-author of the recent book, The Coffee Table Coffee Table Book (Black Dog Publishing), 2003.
Lectures are sponsored by Freemanâs Auction, and are conducted monthly at the National Arts Club, 15 Gramercy Park South. Lectures begin at 6 pm; reception follows at 7 pm. Members free; general admission $15. For reservations, call 212-889-5404, extension 11.
