Hawks Race In Youth Track Championship
The Newtown Hawks youth track and field team competed in the middle school state track and field championship at Manchester High school on June 2. The Newtown athletes overcame four hours of rain, and competed against more than 1,100 athletes from 50-plus teams.
Newtownâs boys earned seventh place, led by Cole Terryâs second-place finish in the high jump with a leap of 5-foot-4 and Will Romanâs third place finish in the 200, in a time of 25.18. The 4x400 relay team of Joel Duval, Ethan Burg, Tyler Dullinger, and Will Roman earned eighth place. Jake Courchene-Roy took sixth in the long jump, with a 16-5 performance.
Annika Alexander garnered second place in the shot put event with a toss of 34-5 and discus competition with a throw of 81-2 to help the girls to a ninth-place finish. Sami Arnold had a sixth-place effort in the long jump with a jump of 13-6, and Jess Shairer high jumped to sixth place.
The team was scheduled to compete in the second annual Western Connecticut Conference Championship at New Fairfield High School on Thursday (after The Bee went to press).
