Hufziger Concludes Record-Setting Season With State Open Success
Mary Hufziger has put together quite a swimming resume at Newtown High School, breaking a trio of team records - resetting some of her own marks from seasons past and earlier this campaign - and holding five pool records.
All of this and she is only a junior.
Hufziger recently wrapped up her campaign by competing in two events during the November 19 State Open at Yale University in New Haven. The lone Nighthawk to qualify for the Open, Hufziger represented the Nighthawks well as she came in sixth in the 100 yard freestyle event in a time of 52.37, and placed 14th in the 100 yard backstroke, making her final touch in 59.77.
In this year's Class LL state championships, Hufziger reset a pair of team records: She finished second in the 100 free in 51:93, earning All State accolades in the process, and was seventh in the 100 backstroke with a time of 59:22.
Following in the footsteps of brother Dan Hufziger, a 2011 NHS graduate who holds the Nighthawk record in the 50 yard freestyle, and is part of the team and pool record-setting 200 free relay squad, the junior standout always wanted to get onto the record board that hangs on the wall above the Newtown High pool.
"It's really exciting. Since I was little, when my brother got a record I always wanted to get a record up there with him," she said. "It's pretty cool to have my name side-by-side with his."
A swimmer for more than a decade, Hufziger has been in the water since she was a baby. Competitive swimming is something she enjoys because of the different dynamics involved.
"I really like how it can be an individual sport, but also a team sport at the same time," she said, alluding to her individual results combining with those of teammates to help the Nighthawks strive to earn team victories.
Hufziger says one of her favorite parts about being on the team is seeing teammates do well.
During the school season, Hufziger practices two hours each day, six days a week. She is a year-round competitor, who also puts in laps with the YMCA Mako swim team. The time spent training and balancing that commitment with schoolwork is the most challenging part of swimming for Hufziger.
Her dedication is paying off in the form of these record-setting performances. Of course, it didn't take long. Hufziger started making her mark on the record board back in her freshman season.
In addition to holding records in the 100 free and backstroke events, Hufziger is part of the team record-setting 200 free relay team (1:38.35, broken in 2014) - the relay squad also holds the pool record - and the 400 free relay team which holds the pool record (3:46.69, set in 2014). She has pool records in the 50 free (25.08, broken this year), 100 free (53.97, broken this year), and 100 backstroke (1:01.26, broken this year). Additionally, Hufziger and that 200 free relay contingent from 2014 hold the South-West Conference championships record with a time of 1:40.30.
"It's really nice to see a kid who is so nice and so humble really excel in her sport," Newtown Coach Becky Osborne said.
