Theater Review: Escalating Mayhem In Theater Barn's '39 Steps'
RIDGEFIELD - Madcap mayhem is happening right now at Ridgefield Theatre Barn. A cast of slapstick lovin' actors is presenting the adaptation, by Patrick Barlow, of Alfred Hitchcock's The 39 Steps, with more energy than can be contained on the stage. Last Friday's opening night crowd was completely caught up with laugh-a-minute action in their midst.
This dark and murderous tale involves the unsuspecting Richard Hannay, played by Bob Lussier, who is caught up with a woman he meets at the theater. He takes her home, expecting seduction, and she winds up dead in his arms.
The German dame of intrigue is portrayed by Suzanne Powers. She has whispered to him of evil goings on, espionage and state secrets that are vulnerable. As well as something about 39 steps.
Richard is on the run, evading a murder charge for this mysterious woman's death. Trying to unearth the truth of this femme fatale's story, he travels to Scotland. Along the way he meets the most outrageous and hilarious group of silly spies and would-be assassins, all played by Matt Austin, Joe Harding, and Ms Powers.
Richard's constant dodging of the police, criminals, and other sundry characters leaves ample opportunity for all manner of high jinks. Changing costumes, physicality, voices, and accents on a dime, these players are a robust troupe of goofy.
Mr Lussier is a total win in this role. He is droll, miffed, clever, and charming. He is worth watching as he reacts to the shenanigans of the others. This actor does not miss a beat and is a perfect foil for the jokesters around him.
In her role of three separate characters, Suzanne Powers portrays a minx, an ingénue, and a woman in love. Ms Powers has mastered a collection of various accents to a tee. She is convincingly serious and genuine. This is a fine actor.
The comedic duo of Austin and Harding must be seen to be believed. These two bounce, literally and figuratively, off of each other constantly. They each exhibit perfect comedic timing. Their antics and characterizations are nonstop funny. The energy they put into their performances is amazing and second only to their talent.
This is a fabulous cast in a riotously entertaining rendition of a well received play. Director Katherine Ray has used every inch of space and every ounce of talent from her cast.
Belly laughter is good for what ails you. Ridgefield Theater Barn's latest offers a heaping helping of hilarious.
