Basketball And Hockey Teams Drop Openers
Newtown High's boys' basketball team dropped a 50-43 decision to visiting Fairfield Ludlowe in the season opener, on December 19.
The Nighthawks had energy and effort throughout the four quarters, but couldn't get any closer than to within six points after the Falcons established an early lead. The visiting Falcons sank 8 of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
Evan Eggleston had 12 points, Todd Peterson scored eight, and Tucker Garrity and Sam Grossano both added seven to lead the Nighthawks. Nick Weiland had five assists, Peterson pulled down five rebounds, and Garrity came away with a trio of steals.
The hockey team dropped a 4-3 overtime contest with visiting Wilton, at Danbury Ice Arena, the night before.
Lucas O'Brien was clutch, scoring the game-tying goal, assisted by Scott McLean, with just 18 seconds left in regulation. Domenic Cartelli assisted McLean, and David Brestovansky set up Cartelli for Newtown's other netfinders.
