Newtown High School’s wrestling team shut out visiting Bunnell of Stratford 83-0 on January 20. Ed Lovely earned his 100th career victory, joining teammates Andy Hubina and Anthony Falbo as Nighthawk grapplers to reach that milestone this season.

Prior to the match, Newtown Youth Wrestling Association (NYWA) team members were on hand as families and businesses were honored for their contributions in helping pay for Newtown High’s new wrestling mat, which cost approximately $12,000. Wrestling parent Kinga Walsh spearheaded fundraising efforts, and financial donations contributed to the efforts.

NYWA President Andy Wellman said it was great for the high school wrestlers, who came up through the youth program, interacting with the young grapplers.

“It’s nice to see the next generation of wrestlers,” Wellman added.

After the youth wrestlers — representing pre-K through eighth grade — were showcased and ran around the circle on the mat to applause from the crowd, they lined up and gave high-fives to the high school wrestlers as they came out for warm-ups.

Because of Bunnell’s thin roster of only eight team members, the Bulldogs forfeited six weight classes. Results of the match are as follows:

106: Nikolas Accousti defeated Peter Marter via technical fall, 17-0 for a 5-0 Newtown lead.

113: Justin Bogdanoff won via forfeit for an 11-0 lead.

120: Jack Wellman won via forfeit for a 17-0 lead.

126: Aaron Occhipinti won via forfeit for a 23-0.

132: Owen Walsh won via forfeit for a 29-0 lead.

138: Jake Duarte pinned Mike Pastor in 1:15 for a 35-0 lead.

145: Lovely pinned Giami Barbalinardo in 1:27 for a 41-0 lead and his century-mark high school win.

152: Alex Stavola pinned Matt Soares in 5:42 for a 47-0 lead.

160: Peter Mihok won via forfeit for a 53-0 lead.

170: Joe Accousti pinned Shawn Romero in 1:20 for a 59-0 lead.
