BROOKFIELD â It might have taken a while for the meet to lumber into action on Tuesday afternoon, but when it did the Newtown High School girlsâ track and field team was already moving at full speed.
The Lady Nighthawks defeated Brookfield (85-65), Bunnell (78-71) and Pomperaug (102-48) at Brookfield High School for their second consecutive quad-meet sweep, giving them a 6-0 record early in the 2003 season.
Strong relays and depth â thatâs what did it.
Although Jacky Curran was the only individual winner for the âHawks on the afternoon, capturing the high jump with a leap of 4-8, the 4x800 (Ball, Katie Lahey, Christine Manfredonia and Sarah Macknight), 4x100 (Leah Herity, Quincey Blanchard, Ali Frobey and Caitlin Weber) and 4x400 (Kate Stickles, Tara Gaston, Macknight and Frobey) relay teams were all winners.
Weber, meanwhile, took second in the 100 high hurdles (only 1.3 seconds off), 300 intermediate hurdles (only 0.8 seconds off) and 1,600 meters (only two seconds off). Frobey was second in the 400 meters (only 1.4 seconds off) and Manfredonia was second in the 3,200 meters (only three seconds off).
Elana Tenenbaum had a second-place finish in the javelin to spark Newtown in the field events.
This sweep follows a season-opening sweep of Foran, Notre Dame and Jonathan Law last week (in a meet postponed by rain). All three relay teams breezed to first-place finishes while Macknight (800 meters) and Curran (high jump) were individual winners.
The âHawks will host Masuk, Lauralton Hall and Joel Barlow on Tuesday, May 6.
