Local Contractor Offers Free Help
To Storm Victims
By Nancy K. Crevier
The catch phrase, âIf it feels good, do it,â can be applied to the philosophy Mark Edwards is embracing in order to help fellow Newtowners.
The owner of Mark Edwards Roofing and Siding, Mr Edwards is offering to help Newtown or Sandy Hook homeowners who may not have the resources or means to replace or repair roofs or siding damaged by Tropical Storm Irene â or any other recent storm â at no cost. Mr Edwards will absorb the cost of materials and labor.
âI have been lucky. Weâve had our busiest year ever, even in this economy. If I can do this and not feel it myself, why not help someone?â he asked.
Mr Edwards is a bonded and insured roofing contractor who has done business in Newtown for more than 18 years, and is a lifetime member of the community. He has provided free labor to the Newtown Historical Society to replace the roof on The Matthew Curtiss House on Main Street, and has also donated his time and materials to Habitat for Humanity projects in the state.
The goodwill gesture is exclusively for Newtown and Sandy Hook residents, he said, and only for owner-occupied homes.
âI drive around and I see homes that clearly need some help, and I wonder if it is someone elderly, or without insurance, or who just canât take care of it for some reason. I think I can help, and it makes me feel good,â he said. âAfter the unbelievable rains and storm, and the thought of winter coming, it seemed time to do something to help others,â added Mr Edwards. âI just hope people donât think this is a scam, or one of those âtoo good to be trueâ deals, and not call me if they can use my expertise,â he said.
He trusts that peopleâs integrity will prevent those who actually have the means to do repairs from taking advantage of him. Jobs will be taken at his discretion.
