Alan Potter

Saves The Day

To the Editor:

Every year a small group of guys volunteer to decorate the town Christmas Tree in Ram Pasture, and they usually end up doing it on the coldest day of the year. This year, the job was made challenging by having many more strings of lights, the Tree Lighting Committee’s idea for that “something special” to celebrate Newtown’s Tercentennial.

Everything started out just fine. On Saturday, November 19, Dan Dalton of Glen Gate Landscaping, Steve Carmichael of Tree Doctor, and Stan Perrone of Kesco Electric, got together to take down the old lights and put up the new. Because there were so many more lights, only two-thirds were put up that day before dark.

Returning last Saturday to finish the job and put up the star, the volunteers found the bucket truck was unavailable. The tree might not be ready for the big event!

Alan Potter, Newtown Arbor Services, Inc, to the rescue!

Although Alan was out enjoying the day, his wife Ruth was able to reach him and explain the dilemma. He came directly to help with his bucket truck. The star will shine brightly, after all, thanks to Alan’s quick response.

Thank you to all of our hardworking volunteers who return every year to help Newtown celebrate the season. And special thanks to Alan Potter for coming through in a pinch, and contributing his time and expertise to this community event.

The Christmas Tree Lighting will be held at Ram Pasture, Friday, December 2, 6:30 to 7 pm. Please join us for the celebration and have a happy holiday season.
