Newtown Parks & Recreation has a lineup of camps, programs, and activities set for this summer, with some already underway.

The camp options are available to various age groups.

The day camp offered at Treadwell Park allows campgoers to swim in the pool, as well as take swim lessons that are included in the camp, according to the Newtown Parks & Recreation Department.

The day camp at Dickinson Memorial Park offers a waterslide for campers when the weather gets too hot. The park also offers skateboard lessons to its campers. The skateboarding lessons at Dickinson started about two years ago. Campers are divided into groups based on ability. Not only are the campers taught how to skateboard, they are also taught all of the responsibilities of being safe in the skate park, according to the department.

Newtown Parks & Recreation Assistant Director RoseAnn Reggiano said that the potential skateboarders do not need to bring too much of their own equipment.

“We supply the skateboards and helmets during camp,” said Ms Reggiano. “Some kids may bring their own skateboards to camp, but while enrolled in camp they cannot just go to the skate park.”

There is also a Teen Adventure Camp, open to ages 10½ to 15 years. This camp is offered from the end of June until the end of July. The Adventure Camp even gets to go on a paintball trip, as well as kayaking and rock climbing.

“This is called the adventure camp for teens because they travel almost every day,” said Ms Reggiano. “They go anywhere from Brown Stone Park, which is in the mountains and has zip-lining, to white water rafting in Massachusetts.”

There are two summer concert series. One is Thursday evenings at 6:30, and the children’s summer concert series is on Tuesday at noon, which the day camp gets to attend. Both take place at Dickinson Park in the band shell.

One of the most popular camps offered through the department is the flag football camp, which is run by Jeff Tolson, a counselor at the Newtown High School. This camp can see anywhere from 50 to 100 campers each year, according to Ms Reggiano.

Some of the other sports camps include basketball and soccer.

For those who are less interested in sports there are specialty camps, including those focused on art classes, science programs, sewing, knitting, and even cooking classes. One very popular specialty camp is the Coding and Minecraft camp, which has already filled up for this summer, according to Ms Reggiano.

The most popular of the specialty camps is Dagorhir Fantasy Camp, Ms Reggiano said. Ms Reggiano said during the “amazing camp” the campers are armed with Styrofoam swords and shields and are able to participate in a live-action battle.

All of the camps began on June 22 and end the second week in August. For a full list of camps and summer activities, visit the Newtown Park & Recreation website, newtown-ct.gov/Public_Documents/NewtownCT_Park/index.
