Newtown High School's cheerleading team, which won the South-West Conference and finished fifth in the Class LL state championships, earned a second-place finish in the 23-team State Open, held at Fairfield Warde High, on March 12.

Fairfield Ludlowe won the competition, narrowly edging Newtown 91.1 to 90.7. Shelton placed third with a score of 89.9.
