Wet Highway

State police said motorist Samuel Gardner, 37, of Waterbury was driving a 2016 Chevrolet vehicle eastward on Interstate 84, east of Exit 11, about 5:23 am on May 3 in wet conditions, when while negotiating a curve in the road, the vehicle veered and then struck a lightpost on the right road shoulder.

The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps evaluated Gardner at the scene and he declined medical transport, state police said. Sandy Hook volunteer firefighters responded to the accident. Gardner received an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions, state police said.

Evading Responsibility

Police report that at about 6 pm on May 4, two vehicles were traveling uphill in parallel lanes on eastbound Mt Pleasant Road, near its western intersection with Tory Lane.

A Honda driven by an unknown person was traveling in the right lane and a 2013 Ford Fusion was being driven in the left lane by a Danbury woman, police said.

As the two uphill lanes merged, the Honda sideswiped the Ford, after which the Honda's driver reversed course and drove away from the accident scene on westbound Mt Pleasant Road, evading responsibility, police said. There were no injuries.

Police obtained the marker plate number for the Honda and are investigating the incident.

CD Case Found

Police reported on May 5 that a Staples-brand carrying case containing 120 compact discs, which have music and audio books recorded them, was found on Currituck Road, near its intersection with Hall Lane.

Police are holding the CDs for safekeeping and ask anyone who knows the owner's identity to contact investigating Officer William Hull at the police station at telephone 203-426-5841, or via e-mail at

Chain Reaction

A three-vehicle chain-reaction accident occurred on westbound Interstate 84, about 5,000 feet east of Exit 11, about 5:37 pm on May 5.

Motorist Karen Spencer, 52, of Thomaston, who was driving a 2008 Subaru Impreza, slowed to a stop for heavy traffic, after which motorist Andrew Jett, 54, of Farmington, who was driving a 2013 Ford Edge SUV, slowed to a stop behind the Subaru, state police said.

Motorist Robert Legagneur, 49, of Burlington, who was driving a 2016 Buick LaCrosse sedan then struck the rear end of the Ford, pushing the Ford into the rear end of the Subaru, state police said.

There were no injuries. Legagneur received an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart, state police said.

Hawleyville DUI

Police report that while they were on special DUI patrol on Hawleyville Road, near Hawleyville Center, they stopped motorist Maurice Brandon, 49, of Carmel, N.Y., for having violated a stop sign in that area at about 8:40 pm on May 5.

Police said that after investigating, they charged Brandon with driving under the influence and with a stop sign violation.

Following arrest processing, police released Brandon on $100 bail for a May 19 appearance on the charges in Danbury Superior Court.

SUV vs SUV

At about 4:26 pm on May 6, motorist Karen Thompson, 53, of Derby, who was driving a 2012 Hyundai Tucson SUV eastward on Interstate 84, about 200 feet west of Exit 9, was slowing for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by motorist Chong C. Choi, 57, of Farmington, who was driving a 2012 Nissan Murano SUV, according to state police.

There were no injuries. Choi received an infraction for following too closely, according to state police.

I-84 Ramp Crash

State police said that motorist Robert Berntsson, 27, of Stamford, who was driving a 2015 Volkswagen Jetta, stopped for a red traffic signal at the end of Interstate 84's Exit 11 off-ramp at about 7:55 pm on May 6, after which the Volkswagen was struck from behind by motorist Brendan Shea, 49, of Hebron, who was driving a 2004 Ford Mustang.

There were no injuries. Shea received a written warning for following too closely, state police said.

Warrant Served

Newtown police report they went to the residence of Renee Stewart, 39, of Bethel at about 9:30 pm on May 6 and served her with an arrest warrant charging Stewart with second-degree failure to appear in court. That warrant stems from a past incident in which Stewart was charged with three motor vehicle violations, according to police.

Police said that following arrest processing, they released Stewart on $500 bail for a May 20 court appearance.

Wasserman Way Crash

Police report that motorist Tabytha Longway, 20, of New Haven, who was driving a 2013 Hyundai Elantra eastward on Wasserman Way, about 500 feet east of its intersection with Nunnawauk Road, at about 12:52 am on May 7, was traveling at a high speed and then lost control of the auto.

The Hyundai crossed the road's centerline and struck the guardrailing along the westbound road shoulder, after which it recrossed the road and struck the guardrailing along the eastbound road shoulder, police said.

The vehicle carried two passengers. There were no injuries. Police said they gave Longway an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions.

South Main Street Collision

Motorist Kweku Sam, 50, of Southbury, who was driving a 2011 Mercedes-Benz E-350 sedan southward on South Main Street, near Wills Road, about 9:50 am on May 7, stopped for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by motorist Alex Rivera-Bairres, 34, of Hopewell Junction, N.Y., according to police.

There were no injuries. Police said they gave Rivera-Bairres a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Two Vehicles Collide

A two-vehicle collision occurred on Main Street, just south of East Street, about 1:38 pm on May 7.

Motorist Sean Leuschner, 18, of Carmel, N.Y, who was driving a 2009 Honda Odyssey minivan, was parked on the northbound shoulder of Main Street, as motorist Kristen Mulvey, 30, of Southbury was driving a 2012 Infiniti auto northward, police said.

The Honda then turned to the left in order to enter the northbound lane, resulting in a collision, police said. There were no injuries. Leuschner received an infraction for making a restricted turn, police said.

Mazda Off Road

Motorist Erin Brelling, 21, of Bethel was driving a 2006 Mazda Tribute SUV eastward on Sugar Street, near its intersection with Main Street, at about 2:15 pm on May 7, when the vehicle traveling in front of Brelling stopped suddenly, according to police.

Brelling then swerved to the right to avoid striking that vehicle, but the Mazda then struck a wooden post alongside the road, police said.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Brelling a written warning for making a restricted turn.

Exit 9 Collision

State police said that motorist Allen Lombardo, 64, of Gaylordsville was driving a 2004 GMC Sierra pickup truck northward on Hawleyville Road, as motorist Maura Slusarz, 18, of Danbury was driving a 2011 Toyota Prius on the Exit 9 off-ramp of eastbound Interstate 84 at about 3:50 pm on May 8.

The Toyota then attempted to make a left turn onto northbound Hawleyville Road, resulting in a collision between the two vehicles, state police said. There were no injuries. State police said Slusarz received an infraction for failure to obey a stop sign.

Hattertown Road Accident

At about 8 am on May 9, motorist Charlotte Maier, 27, of Shelton, who was driving a 2001 Buick Regal sedan northward on Hattertown Road, near its intersection with Boggs Hill Road, slowed for a posted construction area, after which the Buick was struck from behind by motorist Kasey Roman, 19, of New Milford, who was driving a 2005 Chevrolet K-1500 pickup truck, police report.

Maier was transported to Danbury Hospital for unknown injuries and was later released from the hospital, police said. Police said they gave Roman a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Rear-End Collision

A two-vehicle collision occurred on northbound South Main Street, about 350 feet south of its intersection with Glover Avenue, at about 5:15 pm on May 9.

In that incident that occurred in stop-and-go traffic, motorist John Lewis, 59, of 4 Shepaug Road, who was driving a 2011 Ford F-250 truck, stopped and was then struck from behind by motorist Emily Rubin, 45, of 22 Taunton Lake Drive, who was driving a 2015 Jeep Wrangler SUV, police report.

Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded. Police said that both drivers reported neck pain, but both drivers declined transport to the hospital. Police said they verbally warned Rubin for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Main Street Accident

In heavy traffic on northbound Main Street, near its intersection with Church Hill Road, at about 10:39 am on May 10, motorist Kenneth Eschweiler, 46, of Orange, who was driving a 2015 Ram pickup truck, struck the rear end of a 2001 GMC Sierra pickup truck driven by Sarah Hayes, 26, of 40 Great Hill Road, police said. Hayes received possible injuries in the accident, police said.

Eschweiler received a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart, according to police. Also, Hayes received a written warning for failure to renew a vehicle registration, police said.

Underage Alcohol-Related Incident

Police report that at about 10:52 pm on May 10, they stopped motorist Shaina Kendall Stamp, 19, of 10 Phyllis Lane, near 228 South Main Street to investigate.

Police said that after investigating, they charged Stamp with operation of a motor vehicle by a person under age 21 with an elevated blood alcohol content, and also with improper use of high beams. After processing, police released Stamp on $100 bail for a May 24 court appearance.

At about 4:50 pm on May 4, motorist Tina Rose Demaio, 17, of 6-A Skytop Drive, was driving a 2008 Honda Pilot SUV on Old Bethel Road, near its intersection with Sturges Road, when while negotiating a curve in the road, the Honda went out of control, swerved to the right and then struck an embankment, causing the Honda to roll over and land upside down on the street, police report. Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps members went to the scene, determining that the driver was not injured, police said. Hawleyville volunteer firefighters responded to the crash to control an automotive fluids spill. Police said they issued Demaio an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions. (Bee Photo, Hicks)
