Police Probing Gas Station Robbery, Arrests Expected Soon
Police this week continued their probe into a Friday, January 20, nighttime armed robbery at a South Main Street (Route 25) gas station/convenience store, and expressed confidence that they will solve the case and make arrests soon.
At about 10:37 pm last Friday, police responded to a report that an armed robbery had occurred at 151 South Main Street, the site of Wheels Citgo. The business closes at 11 pm on Fridays.
Police described the assailants as one white male and one black male, both of medium build, and both of whom were armed with handguns. The thieves stole an unspecified amount of cash from the store's cash register, police said.
There were no injuries in the incident, according to police. The basic crime is first-degree robbery, which is a Class B felony resulting in minimum five-year prison terms in convictions.
The following night, an armed robbery occurred at Rooster Wines & Liquors at 113 South Main Street, which lies about one-half mile north of the gas station. Police said this week the two armed robberies are not related. Armed robbery is a relatively rare crime locally.
Police Sergeant Aaron Bahamonde said January 25 of the gas station robbery, "We are definitely following some very good leads. We are confident that we will bring this case to a resolution in the very near future."
Sgt Bahamonde said that two male store clerks at the gas station were the victims of the two robbers. Besides the two clerks, there were no other witnesses to the incident, he said. The robbers were inside the gas station building for an estimated three to four minutes during the incident, he said.
It is unknown in which direction the thieves fled the scene after stealing the money, Sgt Bahamonde said. Vehicles that may have been used in the crime were not detected by surveillance cameras or seen by the victims, he said.
No surveillance photography of the incident was available from police.
Detective Lieutenant Richard Robinson is heading the police investigation into the robbery. Police ask anyone with information on the incident to contact them at the police station at 3 Main Street, telephone 203-426-5841.
