The Garden Club of Newtown will host an informational program by Bronwyn (Ronnie) Schoelzel on the topic of "Grow to Show" on Tuesday, March 29, at 1 pm. The program will be in the meeting room of C.H. Booth Library, 25 Main Street in Newtown.marilynn.gardener@yahoo.com or call 203-775-7063.gardenclubofnewtown.com.

Ms Schoelzel will demonstrate techniques for growing and preparing container-grown plants and cut garden specimens for exhibit in flower shows including how to groom the plants and safely transport them to and from exhibitions.

She will also share examples from her own award-winning specimens in a mini-flower show exhibit setting and discuss the house plants and needled and broadleaf evergreen cut specimens from the perspective of a judging panel. Plants displayed will include cacti, succulents, orchids, begonias and other flowering plants as well as ferns.

Ms Schoelzel, a flower show exhibitor and judge, is a resident of Litchfield. She is an active member of Litchfield Garden Club, serving in many capacities including Horticulture and Program Chairman and President.

She is also active in The Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut, serving over the years in various positions including State Horticulture Chairman and Chair of the 2006 and 2007 CT State Flower Shows.   Also for FGCCT, she served as Chair of the Horticulture Entries at the CT Flower Show (2008-11) and as State President of the organization (2011-13).

Recently Ms Schoelzel received 12 blue ribbons, including three top national awards, at the 2016 CT Flower Show in Hartford for her horticultural exhibits.

On the national level, Ms Schoelzel has attained Consultant status in the Gardening, Environmental Studies and Landscape Design Councils of the National Garden Clubs, Inc (NGC). In 2011 she was awarded NGC's prestigious 4-Star Certificate for completion of all four of the organizations sponsored schools.

She is an NGC Flower Show Master Judge and an Approved Horticulture Judge for the Garden Club of America. She has been a judge for the Boston, Newport, RI, Chicago and Connecticut Flower Shows.

When she is not attending to the care of her houseplants and garden, Ms Schoelzel also raises Dalmatians for show. She is a member of the Dalmatian Club of America and Southern New England Dalmatian Club.

The public is encouraged to attend the March 29 program; donations would be appreciated. Registration is not required.

Club meetings will not be held if the Newtown Public Schools are closed due to inclement weather.
