Newtown High School’s field hockey team ended the year with three consecutive losses, falling 2-0 to host Immaculate of Danbury on October 23, 3-0 to host Ridgefield on October 26, and 1-0 to visiting Joel Barlow of Redding at Blue & Gold Stadium on Senior Night, October 27.

The Nighthawks played some of their toughest field hockey against a 14-1-1 Barlow team that went unbeaten in ten South-West Conference games. Newtown dropped a 1-0 overtime loss at Barlow earlier in October. Newtown finishes the campaign with an overall record of 8-5-1-1 (wins, losses, ties, overtime losses), and 5-3-1-1 in conference play. Goaltender Natalie Shaker made 15 saves, and defender Megan Goyda broke up several Barlow attacks, in the Senior Night loss to the Falcons.

The postseason begins on Saturday, October 31, when the SWC tourney quarterfinals take place. Sixth-seeded Newtown will take on No. 3 Bethel (7-2-1 in SWC action) at neutral site Immaculate High, beginning at 10 am.

Emily Dirga, left, tries to get past a group of Barlow defenders during Newtown's 1-0 loss on October 27.
