Through the first two tri-meets of the 2001 season, the Newtown High School swim team didn’t seem to be gaining any ground. First a split on September 14 and then a split on September 20 and just like the Nighthawks were 2-2.

But the ‘Hawks had an opportunity to get over the top on Tuesday when they hosted Stratford in a dual meet.

And a 100-73 win did just that.

Margaret Ashey (200 and 500 freestyle) was a double winner while Amy Robinson (50 freestyle), Kim Mayers (diving), and Melissa Rushefski (100 freestyle) were individual winners. The ‘Hawks also claimed the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay before swimming the last three events of the meet unofficially.

Mayers, a freshman, qualified for the CIAC state championships in just her third meet, scoring 152.3 points.

In a 122-60 win over New Milford, Rushefski was a double winner when she captured the 200- and 500-yardyard freestyle. Ashey (200 individual medley), Mayers (diving), Caitlin Malloy (100 butterfly) and Margaret Randall (100 breaststroke) were all individual winners.

In a much tougher 108-77 loss to Bunnell on the same night, Rushefski (200 freestyle), Mayers (diving), and Amy Robinson (100 breaststroke) were all individual winners.
