Shelton Man Arrested In Fatal Accident

Police said Tuesday they have arrested a 33-year-old Shelton man on a felony charge of misconduct with a motor vehicle following a Sunday night accident in which the pickup truck the man was driving collided with a sedan, killing its driver, a 90-year-old Brookfield man.Newtown Bee reporter who was also at the scene, the vehicles came to rest on the opposite shoulders of the lanes in which they had been traveling. The pickup was on the northbound shoulder, facing west; the sedan was in the southbound shoulder, facing east.

Police said they arrested Miguel Angel Barragan-Santiago on a warrant on Monday evening after he was discharged from Danbury Hospital. Police held Barragan-Santiago on $450,000 bail overnight for a Tuesday arraignment in Danbury Superior Court. Additional charges may be brought against Barragan-Santiago, police said.

Police said bail was set at $450,000 because the man is considered a flight risk. Police said Barragan-Santiago is a Mexican citizen who is in the US as an illegal alien. The man had been deported from the US to Mexico in the past, police said.

Also, Barragan-Santiago does not have a valid driver's license, police said.

The misconduct charge alleges that the defendant was criminally negligent in the death of another person in an incident involving a motor vehicle.

Motorist Henry Petrucelli died following the head-on accident at about 8 pm on Sunday on South Main Street in Botsford, south of Kay Lane.

Police said that Petrucelli was driving a 2013 Honda Civic LX sedan northward on South Main Street, as Barragan-Santiago was driving a 1999 Mazda B-3000 compact pickup truck southward there.

The right-front corner of the Mazda then struck the right-front corner of the Honda, resulting in heavy impact damage to both vehicles. Police did not say where on the roadway that impact occurred.
