'Conquer' Auditions For Town Players
âConquerâ Auditions For Town Players
In Oliver Goldsmithâs comedy of manners She Stoops To Conquer, Charles Marlow, on his way to meet potential fiancée Kate Hardcastle, is duped into thinking the Hardcastle estate is an inn â which works out well for romance, since Marlow is tongue-tied around upper class women but mistakes Kate for a servant, and she plays along. A second romance is carried out in secret between Marlowâs best friend and Kateâs best friend. Vying with them for the family inheritance is Tony Lumpkin, spoiled and foolish son of Squire Hardcastleâs second wife. Madness ensues on the way to a happy ending.
The play is set in the 18th Century, in the countryside of England, and will be staged by The Town Players of Newtown in July.
