Jo Ann Nostrand

Director Extraordinaire In Work And Life

Jo Ann Nostrand, 76, died September 8 after a struggle with COPD in Phelps Memorial Hospital Center in New York. Mrs Nostrand was born in Mount Vernon, N.Y., on March 26, 1931, to Alba and Charles Bassani, who predeceased her. She was the widow of Charles A. Nostrand, Jr, to whom she was married for 57 years.

Mrs Nostrand is survived by her loving son, Charles A. Nostrand III and his wife, Kathy, of Newtown; a devoted daughter, Dawn Nostrand Finn and her husband, Steven; and supportive son-in-law, Will Gonzalez, Jr, of Tarrytown, N.Y. She is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Bea and Roc Orsino of Tarrytown, N.Y.; and sister- and brother-in-law, Edith (Dee) and Len Carlson of Keystone, Fla. She will be remembered by her grandchildren Ryan Finn of Blauvelt, N.Y., and Amanda and Molly Nostrand of Newtown. She also leaves several nephews and nieces. Mrs Nostrand was predeceased by a daughter, Tricia Nostrand Gonzalez, in 2006.

She was an active member of her Tarrytown community, in local PTA, politics, and the Hackley School. She will be remembered for her lengthy tenure as an employee of and then executive director of Tarrytown Municipal Housing Authority for some 40 years. She touched many people in the course of those years and will be remembered for her leadership and fortitude.

Her love of nature and animals was great and her cat, Casey, will sorely miss her. In her last years, her friends and neighbors and her home companion, Andrea, gave her great support.

Mrs Nostrand will be remembered for many reasons, but she was always a director extraordinaire in work and in life. Her passing will leave a void in many lives.

A funeral Mass was held September 12 at Immaculate Conception Church in Sleepy Hollow, N.Y. Interment followed in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery. Reposing Dwyer Funeral Home, Tarrytown, was in charge of arrangements.

Memorial donations may be made to Immaculate Conception Church, 199 Broadway, Sleepy Hollow NY 10591; Elmsford Animal Shelter, Warehouse Lane, Elmsford NY 10523; or the American Lung Association of Hudson Valley, 35 Orchard Street, White Plains NY 10603.
