Bus Driver

Bernice M. Hubina, 87, of Brookfield, formerly of Newtown, wife of the late Steven S. Hubina, died at Danbury Hospital surrounded by family, February 24. Mrs Hubina was born in Stratford on October 11, 1920, daughter of John and Emma (Allaire) Barry.

 She graduated from Bassick High School, Bridgeport, in 1939. She worked at various jobs during World War II to assist with the war effort. Mrs Hubina and her husband owned and operated Mitchell’s General Store in South Britain during the 1970s. After selling the store, she drove a school bus for several years in Newtown. She also enjoyed working at the voting polls in Newtown.

 Mrs Hubina was a communicant and member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Trumbull.

She and Steven spent many summers at their tree farm in Dolgeville, N.Y. She enjoyed reading, trips to casinos, and spending quality time with her grandchildren. She was an avid Boston Red Sox and UConn Husky basketball fan.

Mrs Hubina will be sadly missed by her two sons, Paul Hubina and his wife, Lori, of Newtown and John Hubina of Newtown; her two daughters, Janis H. Carnaroli and her husband, Michael, of Middlebury, and Ellen A. Hubina of Brookfield; her seven grandchildren, Michael Carnaroli, Scott Hubina, Sam Haddy, and Steven, Grace, Janis, and Andrew Hubina. Other special individuals in her life include Kathleen Haddy of Brookfield, Danielle Lieder of Seymour, Megan Splaine of East Greenwich, R. I., Jennifer Murphy of Newtown, and Kyle Carpenter of Gloucester, Mass.; her special friend, Etta Larson; her sisters-in law, Kay Jakucenis and her husband, Vincent, of Trumbull, and Jean Barry of Waterbury; as well as several cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends. She was predeceased by a son, Joseph; and three brothers and three sisters.

A memorial service will be conducted at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 406 White Plains Road, Trumbull, Saturday, March 1, at 10:30 am. Interment will be private, at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hanahoe Children’s Clinic, 205 Main Street, Danbury CT 06810, or to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 406 White Plains Road, Trumbull CT 06611.

Cremation Services of Western Connecticut, 55 Main Street, Danbury, is in charge of arrangements.
