For the fourth year, the Kids Lend A Paw (KLAP) dog walk will be held at Fairfield Hills to support the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) of Connecticut. This year’s event is planned for Saturday, November 1. It will begin at 11:30 am.

Newtown Middle School seventh grader Maddie Stites began organizing the event after being inspired by the ASPCA, which rescued her family’s three dogs — Merry, Sunny, and Chloe.

“They save so many dogs, and I wanted to give back to them,” Maddie said this week.

Maddie also began volunteering with the ASPCA this past summer, helping to take care of both dogs and cats.

The 2.1 mile walk scheduled for Saturday asks each participant to donate $5 or dog/cat supplies for the ASPCA. Maddie said dog food, towels, dog toys that do not have stuffing, dish and laundry detergent, and sponges are great things to donate to the ASPCA.

“This year there will be raffles donated to us by Blue Buffalo,” an announcement for the walk reads on the KLAP website (kidslendapaw.webs.com), “and dog contest prizes. It is a 2.1 mile walk on the Mile Hill South Trail at Fairfield Hills. All you need is $5 a person or donate some dog/cat supplies… Dogs walk free.”

Maddie also said local comfort dogs are expected to participate in the event, and last year’s KLAP dog walk raised $1,000 for the ASPCA. Maddie said she hopes to reach that goal again this year.
