Paula Chipman
Paula Beaver Chipman, 84, formerly of Newtown, died peacefully May 28 in Bloomfield, Conn. She was born on July 5, 1932, in Champaign-Urbana, Ill., to LeilaÃÂ (West) and Paul BeaverÃÂ andÃÂ lived in Appleton, Wis., and Waycross,ÃÂ Ga., beforeÃÂ movingÃÂ as a teenagerÃÂ to New Orleans, La.
Mrs ChipmanÃÂ graduated from IsadoreÃÂ Newman High SchoolÃÂ in 1950 andÃÂ Newcomb College in 1954 (then the coordinate women's college of Tulane University),ÃÂ majoring in biology.ÃÂ She was awardedÃÂ aÃÂ National Science Foundation FellowshipÃÂ in 1954ÃÂ andÃÂ followedÃÂ in her father's footstepsÃÂ byÃÂ doing her graduate work inÃÂ parasitology. Mrs Chipman received her Master's degree from theÃÂ University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, School of Public Health, in 1956.
She marriedÃÂ DavidÃÂ ChipmanÃÂ in 1955 andÃÂ lived inÃÂ Brooklyn and Staten Island, N.Y., beforeÃÂ settling inÃÂ Newtown, in 1961, where theyÃÂ raised their four children.
Mrs Chipman began teaching atÃÂ Western Connecticut State University in 1973 asÃÂ an adjunct instructor in the Department ofÃÂ Biology & Environmental Sciences. When not teaching, sheÃÂ spent many happy summersÃÂ at "the farm" inÃÂ Chase Hollow in Bradford, Vt., playingÃÂ games withÃÂ her kidsÃÂ (and their friends),ÃÂ gardening,ÃÂ taking extended walks in search ofÃÂ wildlifeÃÂ and wildflowers, reading,ÃÂ andÃÂ hostingÃÂ regular gatherings of family and friendsÃÂ out at the picnic table.ÃÂ Mrs Chipman was a gracious and caring person who made everyone - from family membersÃÂ and longtime friendsÃÂ to new acquaintances - feel welcome, worthy,ÃÂ and cared for.
Her children and their spouses,ÃÂ John C. and Michele Chipman of Newtown; Paul S. and Tracy Chipman of Fort Myers, Fla.; Christine L. Chipman and Barry Scheinberg of Bloomfield.; and Richard B. and Liz Chipman of Concord, N.H.; andÃÂ seven exceptional andÃÂ well-lovedÃÂ grandchildren, Paul, Renzie, Abby,ÃÂ Molly, Joe, Jordan, and Meghan, survive her.
Mrs Chipman's dearÃÂ friend and formerÃÂ sister-in-law, WendyÃÂ ChipmanÃÂ ofÃÂ Durham, N.C., and her infantÃÂ grandson, Bennett DavidÃÂ Chipman, predeceased her.
Her children, grandchildren, and extended family and friends will remember Mrs Chipman lovingly as aÃÂ generous, kind, and unwaveringly supportive woman with an easy and infectious laugh, who will be deeply missed.
