Virginia K. (Syron) Schultz, 100, of Newtown died peacefully on July 12 at her residence, with family at her side. She was born in the Bronx, N.Y., daughter of Almeida Thompson and James Syron. In addition to being a longtime resident of the Bronx, she was also a longtime resident of Yorktown Heights and more recently a resident of the Maplewood community at Newtown.

Her daughter Virginia Benoit and husband Tim of Newtown; her son Kenneth Schultz and wife Sandra of Accomac, Va.; her grandchildren, Kristen Schultz Oliver, Alyson Schultz Johnson, Megan Schultz Ochotorena, Erica Benoit, and Ted Benoit; six great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and their families; and a host of friends and admirers survive her.

Her husband, Edward V. Schultz; son, Edward J. Schultz; and brothers, William Syron and James Syron, predeceased her.

She retired as an office manager from Equitable Life Assurance Society in 1985. Then took adult education classes at Fordham University, while also volunteering with Guiding Eyes for the Blind in Yorktown Heights.

In her retirement, Mrs Schultz enjoyed travel and many social and recreational activities with dear friends and fellow residents of Jefferson Village in Westchester County. Her 100th birthday celebration earlier this year was attended by 50 friends and family members. She always had a good sense of humor and said at the celebration that she did not understand what all the fuss was about.

Mrs Schultz was a voracious book reader and a crossword puzzle enthusiast. She loved card games and played regularly with her circle of friends until recently. She attributed her excellent health and longevity to good genes, as well as to a lifetime habit of walking and stair climbing.

She was a devout Catholic and attended Sunday mass every week until a month ago. Mrs Schultz was a parishioner of St Anselm's Church in the Bronx during her youth; of St Philip Neri's Church in the Bronx, where she was married on June 4, 1949; a longtime parishioner of St Brendan's Church in the Bronx; and also of St Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Shrub Oak. Since 2015, she was a parishioner of St Rose of Lima in Newtown.

Friends may call at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown, on Monday, July 17, from 3 to 7 pm.

A Mass of Christian Burial will celebrated in St Rose of Lima Church, 46 Church Hill Road, Newtown, on Tuesday, July 18, at 10 am. Interment will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Valhalla, N.Y.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to one's local hospice, or to Guiding Eyes for the Blind, 611 Granite Springs Road, Yorktown Heights NY 10598 or by visiting guidingeyes.org.
