Edgar W. Beers, 76, of the Hawleyville section of Newtown died July 28 in Danbury Hospital. He was born in Danbury, February 17, 1938, a son of Jennie (Noble) and Morris Beers.

Mr Beers was a graduate of Newtown High School and attended what is now Western Connecticut State University. He served in the US Army and was the longtime dairy manager at the A&P Store in Newtown.

He was a life member and past chief of the Hawleyville Volunteer Fire Company. He was a former member of the Newtown Board of Fire Commissioners and served many years as the purchasing agent for the board.

Active in Newtown civic affairs, Mr Beers served on the Board of Managers of the Edmond Town Hall for many years, was elected to the Legislative Council, and was an active member of the Newtown Democratic Town Committee. He was a member of the Newtown Fish and Game Club and the United Food Workers of America.

A brother, Clifford Beers, and his wife Maryellen, of Newtown; and two nieces survive Mr Beers.

Friends may call at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown, Thursday, July 31, from 5 to 8 pm. All other services and interment in Central Cemetery, Brookfield, will be private.
