Cross Country Squads Begin Season
Newtown High School's girls' and boys' cross country team began the season with a visit to Weston to take on the host Trojans, along with New Milford and Kolbe Cathedral of Bridgeport, on September 11.
The girls defeated Weston 20-39 and Kolbe 15-50, and fell 34-23 to New Milford.
Lu Hage was fifth in a time of 20:48 to lead Newtown. The Nighthawks had the seventh- through tenth-place finishers: Katie Kost 21:07, Emily Tressler 21:31, Courtney Henchcliffe 21:56, and Hallie Filan 22:00. Maddie Fetchick was 13th in 22:57, Gloria Rowley came in 14th in 22:58, Ella Hage was 18th in 23:44, and Julia Klein came in 20th in 24:01.
The boys defeated Weston 16-46 and Kolbe 15-50, and lost to New Milford by a 33-24 score.
Nick Jacobs was fourth in a time of 17:26 and Justin Halmose fifth in 17:51, Max Bloomquist was seventh in 18:04, and Jack Wojtowski ninth in 18:30. Finishing 11th and 12th were Derek Bobowick and Michael Arena with times of 18:51 and 18:52. Evan Hildenbrand was 14th in 19:07, William Tainter-Gilbert was 16th in 19:25, Max Hanson 18th in 19:31.
The Nighthawk teams host Stratford and Joel Barlow of Redding on the trails of Fairfield Hills, adjacent to Reed School, on Monday, September 17. The girls race at 4:30 pm with the boys competing at 5 o'clock.
