Softball Team Wins Big And Small
Newtown High School's softball team won big - a 13-3 triumph at Pomperaug of Southbury in a makeup game on April 21 - and small, as in by playing small ball with a couple of key bunts and timely hits leading to a 2-1 win at Notre Dame-Fairfield on April 23. The Nighthawks picked up another triumph via a strong offensive showing with an 8-4 victory over host New Fairfield in another rescheduled contest, on April 24.
The Nighthawks extended their winning streak to four games and improved to 6-3 overall (2-0 in South-West Conference play).
Against Pomperaug, Shauna Tucker had her first varsity hit, one of 16 in the game for the Nighthawks. Sara Kennedy went 2-for-4, including a double, with a walk, drove in a run, and scored four times.
Shannon Cheh went 4-for-5, including a double, two runs batted in, and three runs scored. Kaysie Fisher was 2-for-5 with two RBI, and one run scored. Angela Carriero went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in. Rachel O'Grady was 3-for-4, including a two-base hit, an RBI, and a run scored.
In the pitcher's circle, Kennedy struck out 12, and allowed six hits and two walks.
Against Notre Dame, in Newtown's first contest that counts in the SWC standings, the Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. Carriero singled and Kendra Saunders sacrifice bunted her to second base. Katie Goyda smacked an RBI single up the middle.
The Lancers tied the score in the sixth inning, and the game went into extra frames. Newtown plated the decisive run in the top of the eighth. Kennedy singled and was sacrificed to second on cleanup hitter Cheh's bunt. Fisher lined an RBI single to center.
Kennedy struck out the side in the bottom of the eighth and finished with 16 strikeouts, two walks, and just one hit allowed.
Newtown's standout pitcher/hitter, Kennedy, also collected her 100th career base hit in the game.
The Nighthawks scored first but fell behind 4-1 at New Fairfield. Kennedy came on in relief and tossed six shutout innings of two-hit ball, striking out seven along the way.
Kennedy also had a timely hit, a two-run double to center field - one of her two hits in the game - to tie the score at 4-4 during Newtown's three-run fourth inning.
Goyda had the go-ahead RBI single in the fifth and added another RBI single. Cheh was 2-for-5 with a run batted in, Tess Mubarek had a hit and drove in two, Carriero was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, and O'Grady had an RBI single.
