Elizabeth “Betty” C. (Johnstone) Viens, 78, of Chicopee, Mass., died Friday, October 25, surrounded by her family, after battling cancer.

She was the mother of Lynn Fowler and mother-in-law of her husband Chris of Newtown.

Mrs Viens is also survived by a son, Ross Viens, and his partner Ken Allard, of Chicopee; another daughter, Dyan Viens of Chicopee; two sisters, Dorothy Saxton and her husband Jim of Las Vegas, Nev., and Joan Topor and her husband Louie of Chicopee; four grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

She was born in Chicopee on July 26, 1935, to Ann (Brown) and John Johnstone. She began working at New England Telephone at age 16 and retired from Verizon with 51 years of service. She was a hardworking volunteer with Verizon Pioneers and South Congregational Church where she served as a deacon.

She was also a devoted grandmother and an avid “eBayer.” Betty loved traveling and motorcycle rides with her boyfriend of eight years, Stan Phillips.

Mrs Veins was predeceased by her husband, Ronald Viens, in 1995; her brother, Jack Johnstone; and five sisters, Margaret Johnstone, Evelyn Johnson, Norma Mutti, Lillias Lanzilloti, and Judith Pavoni.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 29, at 10 am, at Tylunas Funeral Home, 159 Broadway in Chicopee, with burial to follow in Fairview Cemetery, also in Chicopee. Calling hours will be Monday, October 28, from 4 to 7 pm.
