Ski Newtown, a water sports event for Newtown children, took place September 19 on Lake Zoar. The  LOF Adaptive Skiers and Newtown Parks & Recreation Department co-hosted the event, which was designed to teach Newtown children how to waterski or wakeboard and help intermediate skiers/boarders advance to the next level.

LOF Adaptive Skiers Executive Director Joel Zeisler said the main focus of his organization is to teach persons with disabilities how to ski on water and snow. LOF launched Ski Newtown last year, however, “in an effort to raise awareness about our programs among those with boating and water sports interests in the Newtown community.”

Twelve children participated in the Saturday the event,  “and they had a great time,” he said.  The day started with safety instruction and a swim test before participants advanced into training.

After lunch, the participants competed in a fun competition.

“We definitely plan to host more Ski Newtown events next summer,” Mr Zeisler said.

LOF Adaptive Skiers runs one of the largest and safest adaptive water sports programs in the country. In addition to waterskiing, wakeboarding, tubing and kayaking, LOF Adaptive Skiers offers beginner level snow ski and snowboard instruction during the winter months.
