Joseph J. Della Gioia, 84, of Stratford, beloved husband of the late Mary Margaret Kelly Della Gioia, died October 16 in his home, surrounded by his loving family. Mr Della Gioia, a US Army veteran of the Korean War, was born in Stratford to Leanarda (Intonte) and Antonio Della Gioia, and has been a lifelong area resident.

Survivors include his devoted children and their spouses, Joann and Andrew Gallagher of Newtown, MaryAnn and Dennis O'Connor of Stratford, Michele and Joseph Torok of Stratford, and Kelly Della Gioia of Bridgeport; a brother, Michael Della Gioia, and his wife June, of Milford; seven cherished grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. Joe was deeply devoted to his sister-in-law Judy DeSocio. In addition to his beloved wife and parents, two sisters, Laura Cannata and Kel Muzyka; and a brother-in-law, Joe Cannata, predeceased Mr Della Gioia.

He was a retired firefighter for the Town of Stratford, serving for 33 years, and also operated Joe's Trucking Company. He served as president and secretary of Stratford Chapter #20 of the Disabled American Veterans Association.

Mr Della Gioia was an avid cribbage player, enjoyed many trips to Maine with his brother and cousins, and most of all loved spending time with his family.

The family extends its deepest gratitude to the caring staff of Vitas and especially to Candace, his nurse. In addition, a special thanks to Barbara and Susan who provided him with loving care and comfort.

Funeral services took place October 21. Interment was in St John’s Cemetery, Stratford.
