Snapshot: Amy Dent
Occupation: I’m mainly a volunteer these days. I retired from executive recruiting in 2002. I helped companies find middle and senior management personnel in finance and technology.
Family: I’m married to Geoff, and we have two children. Marissa is married to Henry and they live in Manhattan. She’s a partner at Bain consulting. Our other daughter is Christina. She is married to Jonathan, and they live in Milford. She has her own company, Alchemy Workshop, designing hotel interiors. We have one grandchild, Marissa and Henry’s little boy, born in July. His name is Theo. And of course, we have our granddog, Oolong, Christina’s dog. She’s an adorable little Shi-tzu that spends a lot of time at our house.
Pets: We have no pets now, but we had two Portuguese water dogs for many years. One lived to be 15, and the other to 17.
How long have you lived here? We’ve been in Sandy Hook, in the same house, since 1978.
What do you like to do in your free time? I volunteer with the Western Connecticut Health Network hospital gala each year, and I volunteer at Ann’s Place and with the Western Connecticut golf tournament. I have served on the Legislative Council and chaired the Board of Education for a couple of years. Most recently, I was on the Fairfield Hills Authority commission, and for six months after 12/14, I was the online “voice” of Sandy Hook School, dealing with all of the inquiries and donations and such. I like to sew and felt, and I read and I cook.
Do you have a favorite author? There are so many different authors that are excellent in their own genres. I think, right now, it’s Richard Russo. He deals with serious issues, but has a great sense of humor.
Do you have a favorite travel destination? Italy. We’ve been there nine times now, and we haven’t covered it all yet. I like the lakes in Milan. The scenery is spectacular. Milan is such a manageable, interesting city. It’s not as crowded or touristy as places like Florence. It’s a vibrant, “young” city.
What is the best thing about Newtown? The people of Newtown. It’s things like, my car was stuck once on the side of the road, and six people stopped to see if they could help. People get involved, and don’t want to just be spectators.
Who has been the greatest influence in your life? The greatest influence in my life was my mom. She had a lot of adversity, but faced it in a straight-forward manner. She looked for the good to keep her moving forward.
If you could meet one person from history, who would it be? I have to say Thomas Jefferson. He was an enigma, but at the same time, a Renaissance man.
Do you have a guilty pleasure? Watching junky television at night, after everyone goes to bed; but no reality shows.
