Newtown Youth & Family Services (NYFS) is offering three weeklong sessions of its Safety Town program this summer for children entering kindergarten.

Registration is now open for the program, which takes place at NYFS, 15 Berkshire Road in Sandy Hook.

Safety Town is a national program that was developed in 1964 to teach young children important safety information. All safety topics will be taught in collaboration with local community and health agencies, according to NYFS.

Safety topics will include traffic safety, fire safety, water safety, bus safety, bicycle safety, awareness of medicine, awareness of poisons, and stranger danger.

Safety Town combines classroom instruction and the use of a miniature town designed to provide a complete hands-on experience. The miniature town has a firehouse, police station, library, and even features the historic Main Street flagpole. Within this town, there are working traffic lights, crosswalks, bicycle lanes and signs which create an environment for children to practice what they have learned through constructive play.

Sessions this year will run July 25-29, August 1-5 and August 8-12.

A graduation ceremony is held the Friday of each session. Parents and relatives are invited and encouraged to attend this ceremony.

Cost is $40 per child; financial assistance is available.

The program runs Monday through Friday, rain or shine. Each session runs from 9 to 11:30 am, and a snack is offered each morning.
