Newtown High School’s girls’ volleyball team extended its winning streak to seven matches with triumphs over New Fairfield, Masuk of Monroe, and Brookfield during the last week-plus. The Nighthawks carried a record of 11-3 into Wednesday’s scheduled visit to Stratford.

The Hawks beat New Fairfield 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-22) on October 10. Natalie Horn had seven kills and five digs, Jackie Moccio had four aces and five digs, and Genevieve Murray had six kills and a trio of blocks.

Newtown defeated visiting Masuk 3-1 (25-13, 25-23, 7-25, 27-25) on October 12. Kim Buttery logged 28 assists and two aces, Erin Mitchell had seven kills and two blocks, and Mollie Goudy compiled 13 digs.

Brookfield visited on October 15, and Newtown won 3-0 (25-10, 25-12, 25-19). Murray had eight kills and a block, Buttery had 19 assists and seven of Newtown’s 17 aces, and Sarah Nowacki added five kills and two digs. Hannah Groonell registered five aces, five kills, three digs, and two blocks; Goudy had two aces and five digs; Catie Gregory had 11 assists; and Mitchell had four kills.

The Bobcats, after starting the year with seven straight triumphs, have alternated wins and losses amounting to an 11-5 overall mark.

The Nighthawks, after winning the first two sets easily, came from behind in game three to close out the match victory. Brookfield built a 17-11 lead and looked destined to stretch the match to a fourth set, but the Hawks rattled off six unanswered points to tie things at 17. Groonell answered a Brookfield point with a kill followed by an ace for a 19-18 Nighthawk advantage, sparking a 7-0 run. Two more aces and a service point from Groonell, along with timely kills by Nowacki and Moccio, helped Newtown pull away with a 24-18 lead. After Brookfield scored to extend the match, recent junior varsity call-up Kate Petersen’s kill ended it.

“We’ve been working a lot on learning how to finish games, and I think we kind of accomplished that today,” Newtown Coach Tom Czaplinski said. “Hopefully, today, we got a good start to it. We played against a good team and didn’t let our guard down for too many points.”

The win over Brookfield was a nice team effort, with many contributors on the court.

“I love what we did with the starting group, and we were able to close it out with the other girls,” Czaplinski added.

Newtown is scheduled to host Weston on Friday, October 19, at 5:30 pm.
