To the Editor:

Saturday, May 25 was the perfect day for the Newtown Lions Club Duck Race. The Duck Race would not have happened without the help and support of many people who volunteered their time to make it a success. Mike Porco of Porco Construction has allowed us to use the park behind the Village Perk and the Foundry for about fifteen years now. Thank you to The Unclaimed Baggage Band, Magic Marty, Ashurst School of Irish Dance, Lathrop School of Dance and Porco Karate Academy for their excellent, and highly entertaining, shows.

If not for the generosity of the restaurants and businesses who generously donated $2,675 worth of prizes, we would not have sold so many tickets. Another group to be recognized was our “Proud Supporters” — Mortgage Force and Newtown United Methodist Church. Mortgage Force donated the second prize of $500, and the Methodist Church ran their own fair and helped pay for the Newtown Police security.

I want to thank all the members of the Duck Race Committee. This year we had more activities for children and this year they were all FREE. Because of that, we needed more help. Lions who were not committee members, their friends, and family members all pitched in, Newtown High School Leos club Advisor Ellie Hanna came to help with several Leo Club members.

The Newtown Lions cannot thank the staff of The Bee enough for the help they provide in publicizing. You are all so helpful, supportive, and easy to work with.

Last, but not least, I want to thank the members of the Newtown community who buy Duck Race Tickets each year and come to our event. We want you to know that seeing you have fun at the race makes it all worthwhile.

Sincerely,

Bob Schmidt, Duck Race Chair
