SWC Tournament Seedings And Matchups Set; State Cross Country Meet Date Change

The seedings and matchups have been set for the South-West Conference tournaments, and Newtown High School’s field hockey, soccer, and volleyball teams will all host first-round contests. Schedule is as follows:

Girls’ swimming and diving: The diving portion of the championships were held at Weston High on October 24. Kiera Sughrue earned fifth place, Hannah Weatherby ninth place, and Kylie Giroux 17th. The swimming events will be held Saturday, October 27, at Masuk High in Monroe, beginning at 3 pm.

Field hockey: Quarterfinals: No. 3 Newtown hosts No. 6 Bethel Thursday, October 25, at Blue & Gold Stadium starting at 6 pm. The semis are set for Monday, October 29, at the higher seeds, at 6 pm. Finals are Thursday, October 1 at 7 pm (site to be determined).

Boys’ soccer: Quarterfinals: No. 4 Newtown hosts No. 5 Notre Dame-Fairfield Friday, October 26, at Blue & Gold, beginning at 3:30 pm. Semis will be held on Monday, October 29, at the higher seeds at 7 pm. Finals are Thursday, November 1 at 7 pm (site to be determined). The NHS boys defeated visiting New Fairfield 2-1 in the season-finale on October 24 and jumped from the sixth seed to the fourth seed.

Girls’ soccer: Quarterfinals: No. 1 Newtown hosts No. 8 Joel Barlow of Redding Friday, October 26, at Blue & Gold, at 7 pm. Semis will be held Tuesday, October 30, at the higher seeds, at 7 pm. Finals are Friday, November 2 at 7 pm (site to be determined).

Girls’ volleyball: Quarterfinals: No. 2 Newtown hosts No. 7 New Milford Monday, October 29, at 6 pm. Semifinals are Thursday, November 1, at the higher seeds, beginning at 6 pm. Finals are Saturday, November 3, at 7 pm (site to be determined). Newtown defeated host Joel Barlow, the tourney’s top seed, 3-2 on October 24, handing the six-time SWC champion Falcons their first loss of the fall.

The SWC cross country championships were held on October 17. State championship races will take place Friday. The CIAC, on October 24, announced the following schedule change: “Due to the forecast of extreme weather, the CIAC Cross Country Championship Class meets originally scheduled for Saturday, October 27 at Wickham Park in Manchester, have been moved to Friday, October 26 at the same venue. The race times and schedule for all 12 divisional races will be the same on Friday as scheduled on Saturday. The decision is being made with the safety of the student athletes in mind, with the possibility for weather conditions impacting the course and competition on Saturday.” For more details, visit [naviga:u]casciac.org[/naviga:u].
