Girls Place Seventh As Cross Country Teams Race In State Meet
Newtown High School’s girls’ and boys’ cross country teams raced in the Class LL State Championship meet, at Manchester’s Wickham Park, on October 26.
Danbury, with a low score of 56, won the competition. Newtown scored 207, led by top team finisher Rylee Harrell, who was 19th, to place seventh. The NHS girls qualified for the State Open.
On the boys’ side, Stapes of Westport was first with a score of 78. Newtown came in 16th with 410.
Harrell finished in a time of 20:08. Race winner Mari Noble, of Greenwich, completed the course in 18:57.
Lu Hage was 26th in 20:26; Emily Tressler placed 43rd in a time of 21:05; Maddie Fetchick was 56th in 21:27; and Courtney Henchcliffe was 63rd in 21:37. Also racing for Newtown were Katya Kost, 77th in 22:04 and Gloria Rowley, 80th, in 22:09. There were 136 girls’ finishers.
Miller Anderson, of Hall, won the boys’ race in 15:57. The Nighthawks were led by Nick Jacobs, who came across the finish line in 53rd with a time of 17:22. Max Bloomquist was 58th in 17:24; Justin Halmose placed 60th, clocking in with a time of 17:27; Jack Kuligowski was 115th in 18:19; and Derek Bobowick was 124th in 18:32. Also running for Newtown were Max Hanson, 135th in 18:55, and William Tanter-Gilbert, 159th in 20:27. There were 174 finishers among the boys.
