The Society of Creative Arts in Newtown (SCAN) Art About Town series is a partnership between SCAN and local businesses, offering members of the community the opportunity to enjoy the arts as they go about daily chores.

This year’s host business is The Bottle Stop Wine & Spirit Superstore. Within their store, at 5 Queen Street (next door to Caraluzzi’s Market), SCAN will present five small-scale art shows from March through December. Each show will feature a SCAN artist and run approximately two weeks.

For the opening season show, SCAN will present the works of Newtown artist Roberta Shea, March 26 to April 8. Ms Shea will be exhibiting works including oil painting and original monotype collections.

Ms Shea paints landscapes inspired by Newtown’s hills and her recollections of summers in Madison, Conn., and Monhegan Island, Me.

“Loosely constructed and expressive, my paintings are more emotive than narrative,” the artist said. “Back in the studio, I work and rework each painting while allowing the paint to direct the conversation and my imagination.

“Recently, I have been exploring monotype printmaking,” she added. “As an artist, I feel the purpose of art is to open our eyes to reconsider the seemingly mundane as it truly is: unique, fresh, insightful, and exciting.”

Ms She studied art at Southern Connecticut State University, taught art in public schools, is a docent at the New Britain Museum of American Art, and is a former SCAN board member. In 2014, her work was included in “Sphere of Influence” at The Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury, she participated in a group exhibition of triptych paintings at Good News Café in Woodbury, and she was featured in a one-artist show at Woodland Café in New Haven.

This past fall, she participated in a painting workshop in Saxton River, Vt., with the noted contemporary landscape painter Eric Aho, and had several of her works selected for the fall television series, The Affair. This summer Ms Shea Roberta is looking forward to participating in a printmaking residency in Ballinskeligs, County Kerry, Ireland.

Bottle Stop is open Monday through Saturday, 9 am to 9 pm; and Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm.
