Nighthawk Track And Field Athletes Excel In State Championships

Newtown High School's girls' and boys' track and field teams had solid performances in the Class LL state championship meets, which took place at Manchester High School, May 31 and, after rain halted competition, June 1.

There was a record-setting performance by the girls' 4x100 relay team, and some runner-up results for competitors from both NHS squads.

The girls placed tenth among 23 schools with 30 points, and the boys were eighth among 22 programs with 37.50 points. Danbury won the girls' competition with 104 points, and Staples of Westport led the boys' field with 81.

Carly Swierbut was second in the 100 meter dash with a finals time of 12.63. Swierbut also broke the top ten in the 200, placing ninth in 26.20.

Erin Tressler finished ninth in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:21.47.

The 4x100 relay of Brianna Lovely, Swierbut, Emma Curtis, and Katie Ryan placed eighth in 50.42, and set a Newtown High record in the process.

Newtown's 4x400 relay of Jordan Stofko, Jaclyn O'Leary, Camille Johnson, and Tressler was 11th in 4:25.79. The 4x800 relay of Lauren King, Elizabeth Chamiec-Case, Lu Hage, and Camille Johnson came in 13th in 10:37.19.

The Nighthawks brought home strong results in the field events.

Lauren Russo was runner-up in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 11-06. Russo placed tenth in the triple jump with a 32-03.75.

Marley Marston was fifth in the shot-put competition with a finals round heave of 35-03.25. Marston was also tenth in the discus with a throw of 91-02 and eighth in the javelin throw with a 99-02. Annika Alexander was seventh in the shot-put with a 34-07.50. Alexander placed third in the discus event with a throw of 106-05.

On the boys' side, Brenden Reeds came in 15th in the 1600, clocking in at 4:40.30.

Brett Deri came in sixth in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.78. He came in fifth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 41.60.

The 4x100 relay of Kevin Arther, Cormac Roe, Adam Manes, and Tom Shkreli placed 12th in 45.09. Newtown's 4x400 relay of Deri, James Barden, Grant Moxham, and Arther was eighth in 3:32.19. The 4x800 relay contingent comprising Ryan Escoda, Joel Duval, Dylan Bartlett, and Christian Lestik was seventh in 8:30.54.

Just as the girls performed well in the field events, the boys had some standout efforts.

Zach Crebbin was fifth in the high jump, getting over the bar at 6 feet.

Aiden Jasinski placed sixth in the pole vault, clearing 12 feet. Dylan Lew was ninth in the pole vault, clearing 11-06. Bartlett came in 15th in the event, at a height of 10-06.

Adam Manes was sixth in the long jump with a leap of 20-07.50.

Jack Godfrey was second in the shot-put with a toss of 49-01.50; he took third in the discus with a throw of 134-03. Ryan Williams came in fifth in the discus event with a 126-07. Ioannis Kousidis was 15th in the discus with a throw of 109-03.

Grant Untiedt was 11th in the javelin throw with a launch of 133.
