Police Probe Identity Theft
The Newtown Police Department’s Facebook page this week displayed a blurry surveillance photo of a man believed to have committed identity theft that resulted in a loss of “several thousand dollars,” said police spokesman Lieutenant Aaron Bahamonde.
The unknown man obtained the personal information of a Newtown resident and then opened up an illegal credit card account in that persons’s name, Lt Bahamonde said.
With the illicit account, the man illegally bought items at Target in Bethel on April 12, and at Stop & Shop In Newtown on April 7 and April 9. Additionally, the man set up a booking with Airbnb on April 8, but the man later canceled that booking and had money refunded to him, the lieutenant said.
The man is believed to drive a newer white Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV. The surveillance photo distributed by police was taken as the man was exiting the Target store at 12:22 pm on April 12.
The man depicted in the photo has some facial hair. He is wearing an Adidas hat and an Express green jacket. The jacket has the word “Unites” on its back panel.
Anyone with information on the situation is asked to contact investigating Officer Leonard Penna at the police station at 203-426-5841.
