Kids Cancer Camp Reunion Planned March 28

Colebrook — Children who have ever faced a diagnosis of cancer are invited to attend Camp Rising Sun’s Reunion Weekend on March 28–29 at Camp Jewell YMCA. The overnight weekend is free and allows perspective and first-time campers the opportunity to explore the camp, while building new friendships with camp counselors and fellow campers. 

Returning campers are eager to reunite with lifelong friends along with the prospect of building new friendships. Activities planned for the weekend are dependent upon the weather but may include tubing, snowshoeing, arts and crafts, and sports.

“It’s a great way for campers to have fun, build friendships, and see that they are not alone in their struggle; all while learning more about Camp Rising Sun,” says Tina Saunders, American Cancer Society Camp Coordinator.

This year marks the Silver Anniversary of the American Cancer Society’ Camp Rising Sun, a camp where children ages 6–17 who are in treatment or remission for cancer can experience a safe overnight summer camp. This year, the camp will be held during the week of August 17–22 with summer activities of swimming, photography, magic tricks, board games, hiking, horseback riding, and boating. 

Caregivers of a child who has, or is currently receiving treatment for, cancer, can be confident about campers’ medical care. At Camp Rising Sun, there is always a pediatric oncologist and at least four nurses available on site, 24 hours a day, throughout the duration of camp.  Camp Rising Sun is staffed by volunteers who come to camp from all types of backgrounds, including teachers, firefighters, police officers and students.
