Town & State Police To Conduct Sobriety Checkpoint

Town police and state police plan to conduct a sobriety checkpoint in Newtown on the night of Friday, September 7, and the early morning hours of Saturday, September 8, to find and apprehend drunk drivers who are traveling in the area.

Town police did not disclose the location of the checkpoint.

One town police supervisor plus six town police officers will participate in the enforcement project, as will one state police supervisor and five state troopers. The 13 police officers will stop drivers who are traveling in both directions to check on whether the motorists are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

Police will briefly interview motorists who have been stopped to determine whether they are intoxicated, according to Newtown Police Sergeant John Cole.

Police will be checking for various other violations, such as driving without wearing a seatbelt and driving with a suspended license.

Grant money will cover three-quarters of the police overtime costs for the enforcement project.
