Danbury Broadview 51, Newtown 42 â The short-handed Newtown squad fell to Danbury Broadview in the opening round play of the Yorktown AC Winter Classic Tournament. Brendan DeAngelis led Newtown with 17 points and David Lucia contributed with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Newtown 60, New Castle (NY) 26 â Newtown was firing on all cylinders with Josh Barrett repeatedly finding slashing teammates for easy buckets. Newtownâs leading scorers, Brendan DeAngelis (16 points) and John Kerins (14 points), helped propel the Hawks to an early double-digit lead. Stifling team defense on the perimeter by DeAnglelis and Barrett, combined with dominating play in the paint by Eric Samuelson, David Lucia, and Ryan Crowell, kept the New Castle squad off balance on offense.
Newtown 67, Yorktown 29 â All nine Newtown players scored in a blistering offensive performance lead by Brendan DeAngelis, Trey Trudell, and Kyle Wilcox. Early steals by John Kerins and a hustling Eric Samuelson helped Newtown hold the opposition to 10 first quarter points. Newtown outscored Yorktown 23-7 in the second period on the strength of solid play on the low blocks by Ryan Crowell, who finished with 11 rebounds, 6 points and 4 assists. Three pointers by Justin Brophy and Trudell capped off the win.

Stamford 34, Newtown 29 â Newtown lost to Stamford in the Ridgefield Tournament. Alyssa Finkenstadt led Newtown with 9 points and Jessica Jowdy added another 6 points in the losing effort. Riley Wurtz, Jessica Lynch, Nora Murphy, Kendall Svanda, Arianna Papaj, Stefanie Clavette, and Meghan Condon also scored in the contest.
Southbury 41, Newtown 29 â Newtown lost to Southbury in the second game of the Ridgefield Tournament. Newtown led at the half by 2 points but was unable to hang on for the win in the second half. Arianna Papaj led Newtown with 11 points. Alyssa Finkenstadt and Riley Wurtz added 8 and 6 points, respectively. Nora Murphy and Jessica Lynch rounded out the scoring with 2 points each.
Newtown 38, Westport 28 â Newtown ended the Ridgefield Tournament with a win by beating Westport on a balanced scoring attack from Jessica Jowdy (12 points), Riley Wurtz (11 points), and Jessica Lynch (10 points). They also shot a combined for 12 for 16 from the foul line. Alyssa Finkenstadt, Kendall Svanda, Meghan Condon, and Stefanie Clavette all scored in the winning effort.
New Fairfield 48, Newtown 43 â Newtown lost to New Fairfield in a very exciting game. The game had ten lead changes with Newtown prevailing at the end. Riley Wurtz and Alyssa Finkenstadt lead the offensive effort with 15 points and 13 points, respectively. Alyssa was also 5 for 7 from the line in the fourth quarter. Jessica Jowdy scored 9 points and also ripped down 7 rebounds. Jessica Lynch, Meghan Condon, Arianna Papaj, and Abbey Doski also were in the scoring column.
Southbury 42, Newtown 35 â Newtown lost to Southbury in a very close contest. The game was tied at half time but Southbury prevailed at the end. Jessica Jowdy, Riley Wurtz, Alyssa Finkenstadt, and Arianna Papaj lead Newtown in scoring with 13, 8, 6, and 4 points, respectively. Stefanie Clavette and Kendall Svanda played well underneath guarding Southburyâs low post players.
Newtown 46, New Canaan 43 â Newtown beat New Canaan on Saturday behind a balanced scoring attack. Alyssa Finkenstadt and Riley Wurtz scored 15 and 14 points, respectively, from the perimeter and Jessica Lynch and Kendall Svanda lit it up in the low post position with 9 points apiece. Arianna Papaj, Stefanie Clavette, and Meghan Condon also scored in the win. Abbey Doski played well at the point dishing out 6 assists and Nora Murphy had two steals in the effort.
Newtown 53, Ridgefield 39 â Newtown beat Ridgefield decisively on Sunday behind a great defensive effort from Arianna Papaj, Jessica Lynch and Stefanie Clavette. Jessica Jowdy, Alyssa Finkenstadt Riley Wurtz and Abbey Doski lead the scoring effort with 12, 10, 9, and 7 points, respectively. Papaj, Lynch, Clavette, Nora Murphy, Meghan Condon, and Kendall Svanda all scored in the contest.
Girls 6th
Redding 30, Newtown 23 â Newtown played strong and had a 9-point lead going into the fourth quarter, but was unable to get the win. Danielle Shine dominated with 6baskets and one free throw. Mary Jo Rossi scored 2 from the floor and 2 from the foul line. Kerry Scallon and Hope McMorran each had 4 rebounds and Jenny Indelicato had 3. Kristie VosWinkel had 2 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals. Tess Murray and Jess Principi also each put 2 on the board.
Junior Boys
Sonics 51, Wildcats 39 â Sean Ross popped in 20 points. Defensive leaders were Joe Davis, Andrew Ryan, and Kevin Dennis. The Wildcats Mario Pizighelli dropped in 19 points and Jamie McDonald contributed 4 points. Joe Rahtelli played well defensively.
Tarheels 50, Wildcats 21 â Mike Daubert of the Tarheels dropped in 15 points and Evan Noonan has 12 assists. Matt Spencer with 6 steals and Stephen Rahr with 8 rebounds played well defensively. Mario Pizighelli with 8 points led the Wildcats offensively. Chris Otero led the team defensively.
Regulators 50, Pride 46 â Jack Champagne popped in 15 points and Shaun Dardine dropped in 11. Dean Deamers contributed with 5 assists and Mike Lord grabbed 7 rebounds for Regulators. Collin Cooper with 11 points and Chad Magoulas with 10 points led the Pride offensively. Wyatt Dupuy (5 assists), Charles Loomis (3 steals), and Tom Bauer (6 rebounds) led the team defensively.
Nighthawks 45, Statesmen 24 â Michael Scharfenberg led the Nighthawks offensively with 16 points. Pat Sullivan popped in 11 points, Brandon Marks 5. Cameron McCleary put away a key 3-point shot and Ryan Palmer added 2 points and strong defense. Cole Baldino of the Statesmen canned 10 points, Stefen Dullinger 2 assists, Harry Snellback, 3 steals, and Chris Devaney with 4 rebounds all played a good defensive game.
Maulers 60, Nuggets 39 â Mac Morlock dropped in 14 points. Kory Kling and Dylan Tampascio had excellent floor games. Gabe Ruiz (4 assists), Christian Matler (7 steals), and P.J. Hickey (18 rebounds) played outstanding for the Maulers. The Nuggetsâ Mike Lengel and Mike Lobosco both scored 10 points each. Lengel had a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists. Scott Schmidt had 5 blocks and grabbed 8 rebounds. Devin DiNicola had 6 steals and played well defensively.
Bears 47, Huskies 45 â Kevin Phillips popped in 16 points and Kyle Harrington grabbed 6 rebounds for the Bears. Domenik Fedak was high scorer for the Huskies with 26 points. John Corsi played the floor well. The whole team played with a lot of heart.
Avalanche 60, Nets 42 â Sean Burson scored 19 points, Eric Sutton, 12 points and Ben Stoller 8 points and 4 assists. Eric Sutton grabbed 13 rebounds, Matt Shannon and Burson each had 3 steals. Robbie Daigle was a sharpshooter, scoring 8 points. Ben Stoller raced down court and was fouled as the buzzer sounded while attempting a shot behind the 3-point circle at the end of the first half. Stoller sank all three foul shots. Greatest game of the year â highest amount of points; everyone on the team scored. High Scorer Austin Bonadfio for the Nets popped in 26 points. Mason West contributed 5 points. Austin Puleri had 4 assists and 4 steals. Patrick Thornberg grabbed 8 rebounds. Austin Bonadio had a strong game, also contributing 8 rebounds.
Gunners vs Vipers â Fiore, Sayegh and Ekstrom shared high scoring on offense. Ryan (6 assists), Helgren (4 steals), and Burton (6 rebounds) and Volkers with great rebounds all played well defensively for the Gunners. The Vipersâ Richard Sandler dropped in 13 points and Jim Pearson grabbed 14 rebounds.
Junior Girls
Hawks 21, Mercury 20 â Molly Emmerthal and Olivia Phenix each scored 6 points. Lydia Beiter contributed with 6 assists. Phenix and Caitlyn Gibney were the defensive stars for the Hawks. Alexa Powell dropped in 7 points and Jane Sclafani contributed another 6. Kristen Grabowski and Georgia Contois played great âD.â
Knicks 29, Da Bears 10 â Kelly Gaston popped in 9 points and 2 assists. Lia Tassinari with 5 steals and Rachel DiVanno with 9 rebounds played well offensively and defensively, taking the Knicks to victory. Katie Fossum scored 4 points and Ellyn Gordon scored 2 points. Molly Mahony with 4 steals and Luiza Tolkucci played well defensively.
Suns 40, Rebels 24 â Jade Mather popped in 10 points and Courtney Tenney dropped in 8 points. Tressa Scott had 8 assists and Stephanie Perrotti grabbed 10 rebounds. Jessica Gibbons dropped in 11 points and Kiersten Lynch popped in 6. Christina Caporale and Lynch led the team defensively.
Huskies 36, Liberty 16 â Liz Eiseman dropped in 8 points and Jillian Moller contributed another 6 points. Kristy Engler, Jenny Davies, and Ali Blume played well defensively for the Huskies. Courtney Escoda and Amanda Stanton scored 6 points each. Stephanie Zamary played aggressive defense for the Liberty.

Nighthawks 33, Runninâ Rebels 27 â In a close-fought battle, Drew Tarantino led the Nighthawks to win with 14 points. Ty Runkle was the assist leader, with Nate Steinebrey playing tough on defense. Jimmy Leidlein led the Nighthawks in rebounds. Grant Ricketts (14 points) and Zach Bergeron (12 points) led the Rebels offense. Austin Raftery led with assists (6), and Garrison Buzzanca was the defensive standout. Grant Larnerd was tough on the boards with 11 rebounds.
Huskies 48, Runninâ Rebels 27 â Tommy Gleason and Angel Santos sparked the Huskies offense contributing 11 points each. Dan Winn was tough on defense with 4 steals and the Pisani brothers, Ryan and Eric, had great floor games. Garrison Buzzanca and Austin Raftery led the Rebels with 8 points a piece, and Zach Bergeron contributed with 4 assists. Grant Larnerd was tough on defense with 4 steals, while Dominic Scarangella pulled down 8 rebounds.
Mavericks 43, Hawks 40 â It came down to foul shooting at the end with Robert Linden hitting 5 of 5 from the line, as the Mavericks closed out the Hawks 43 to 40. Linden (16 points) and Adam Harrison (12 points) led the Mavericks offense, with Joseph Calbo contributed with 6 assists and Nick Strokis and Wesley Morlock setting up the half court âOâ with crisp passing. Tough team defense helped seal the win, with Matt Baldino pulling off 5 steals and Marc Hernandez contributing with 7 rebounds. Otto Kerler played the last 3 quarters with 4 fouls, but was a force on the inside. The Hawks offense was led by Andrew Derrickson who scored 13, helped by Doug Miller with 6 assists. Matt Lindell was a defensive force with 4 steals, while Virgil Proccacini played tough on the boards with 7 rebounds. Alex Romeo and Sean Reilly had strong floor games for the Hawks.
Free Agents 42, Suns 31 â The Free Agents prevailed in a run and gun game. Chase Wurtz led the way with 16 points and 7 assists. Ryan Rosenberger had 7 steals and Justin Adsitt was a force inside with a double-double (13 rebounds, 12 points). Tim Kelly and Chris George led the Suns with a combined 15 points. Greg Ladestro was tough on D with 4 steals, while Patrick Pierce pulled down 8 rebounds.
Celtics 42, And One 31 â Matt Wood (15 points) and Brendan Peterson (10 points) led the Celtics to the win. John Payne and Ryan Errico were tough on the boards, while Stewart Mitchell and Jordan Trager contributed with 6 assists and 4 steals. Nathan Kalra led And One with 21 points. Jordan Sock was tough on defense with 6 steals, and Mitchell Girgasky contributed with 7 rebounds. Brian Armold and Spencer Brindley had strong floor games.
Intermediate Boys (5th)
Wildcats 37, Twisters 25 â Patrick Berger popped in 16 points and Luke Rustici and Peter Manfredonia combined for another 17 points. Outstanding defense from Deegan Beauchemin and Manfredonia grabbed 10 rebounds. An impressive team effort on both sides of the floor helped the Wildcats beat the previously undefeated twisters. Baxter Hankinâs basket late in the game helped seal the win for the âcats. Kevin Ovendorf and Jaret DeVellis combined for 15 points and David Matthews contributed 4 assists. Liam Decker and Andrew Cragin played solid defense and were strong on the boards.
Rockets 37, Sonic Pumpkins 25 â James Burdette and Bobby Archiere powered the Rockets to victory, combining for 28 points. Wiley Zahansky with 6 assists, Jeremy Fellin with 5 steals and Archiere with 12 rebounds played a strong game on both sides. Steve Grasso sparked the offense of the Sonic Pumpkins with 12 points, while Shane Quimby played tough defense on the floor.
Heat 39, Celtics 26 â Charlie Hueg and Albert Dean combined for 20 points, and Colin Reilly contributed with 8 assists. Mitchell Godin with 3 steals and Connor Lemay with 7 rebounds led the Heat defensively. Tommy Rahr chipped in 5 points and CJ Dunn had 6 to lead the Celtics âO,â and Will Swain contributed with 4 assists. Christian Hoffmann and Andrew King led the Celtics âOâ with multiple steals and rebounds. Dave Csordas grabbed 5 rebounds and CJ Dunn has 4 steals and 4 blocks.
Bulldogs 28, Knicks 21 â Will Dalton played a good floor game with 10 points, 5 rebounds and 5 steals for the Bulldogs. Carl Whippie popped in 6 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Great team defense. Adam Israel had 5 steals. Bryce Decker with 13 points and Harry Dupuy led the offensive for the Knicks. Keaton McCleary contributed with 5 assists. Aidan Petershak and Tyler Lennox lead the âD.â
Celtics 26, Scorpions 20 â Will Swain popped in 10 points. Celtcs played a close game against the hard-fighting Scorpions. Playing well for the Celtics included David Csordas and Connor Ryan. Eric Street grabbed 10 rebounds and CJ Dunn worked the floor well with 4 steals and 4 blocks. Trevor Lopez and Nick Cirone each dropped in 4 points and Brian Raab contributed with 6 assists. Colton Moroney had 12 steals and Steven Tramontazzi grabbed 4 rebounds. The Scorpions played the game during the fourth quarter press. Alec Clark & Lopez brought energy to the game.
